I can't figure out Houston. Seems so random that it's become one of the largest cities in the US.

Oil, the Port, Med Center

its an EXTREMELY business-friendly local Govt. has been historically

old Oil money married East-Coast Social elites brought a lot of Cultural things to the City.

To me, Houston is a downtown sourrounded by Mandeville on steroids unless you are in little Mexico. The food scene there is solid but not great. It does have multiple pro sports teams so that is a plus and the economy is on point. As someone who travels quite a bit, saying Houston is an Alpha city is a joke. In the US there is only one at the top ten alpha level in my book and that is New York. Hell, only LA and maybe Chicago are other alpha cities. Houston is beta as frick. Deal with it.

How is it random? The oil and gas industry has attracted people from all over. And the great economy as a result of it has attracted people from other areas in other industries.

The medical center is literally the best in the world and has attracted a bunch of people in the medical profession.

But the whole food thing? If you like chain restaurants I guess you can make an argument.. but

Isn't it crazy that it took Anthony Bourdain 8 seasons into this third show to visit the country's best food scene??!

Houston was listed as a beta city by another poster. In short, I don't know who made this list with Houston rated so high, but if it is, then I question the list.

You are just saying that to be funny. I have actually been to several places to eat in Houston, each one handicap accessible...

Only time I went it seemed really suburban. A huge sprawl like Phoenix.

If I visited Houston, where would I need to go to get that big city cultural experience? What's there to see and do?

Why the butt hurt over Houston claiming to have a food scene? No one-not even Louisiana- can debate Houston's food options. Sure they have chains, who doesn't? But there are lots of other offerings.

I realize that's all we really have to offer- good food. But we don't have an exclusive on it. Get the frick past it and be glad we have access to a world class city less than a days drive away.

Been here 20 years because of work and I and I think this is a crock of shite. No way a top ten city in the workd. Maybe one of the most diverse large cities in the world...will give it that.

Houston never misses an opportunity to pat itself on the back.

I lived there for a good while in my teens. Wasteland of stamped-out sprawl.
