My thread yesterday discussed the pedi-dentist not allowing parents in the room during procedures… this is different but related… homeowners showing up to the job site during the build… some are cool and basically are just curious… but every now and than you get one who has Googled everything he thinks he needs to know and basically is just in the way.. you can always tell by the classroom terms their using… doesn’t bother me one way or another… how does the rest of the OT respond and handle these situations

They may be annoying, but they are paying a shite ton of money for the project. So they have every right to be there.

Just had a pool built. I was here pretty often and kept them from making 3 major mistakes. Lack of communication between the contractor and subs. 2 would have not been able to be fixed and the other would have been a major ordeal to fix. I think ultimately it comes down to no one cares as much as the person paying for it, whatever “it” may be. If I built a house, I would be there almost every day going over stuff. Just the way the world is now. People are trying to do the bare minimum to get by

Builders in my experience are just project managers. The ones I used were fine with me dropping by. They just wanted to ensure they were the ones communicating with the subcontractors.

When we built, there was never a week I wasn’t onsite for at least 3 days a week for a minimum of 2 hours. There were also periods when I was onsite everyday for weeks at a time.
I also spoke with the builder on the phone 90% of the mornings before 9 to go over the various items regarding the house.

I self contracted so I needed certain information and needed updated timelines so that I could purchase materials, schedule deliveries and schedule inspections.

Reminds of the old joke. It’s basically this:

Asked a roofer how he got into roofing. He said he used to be a plumber but got tired of people watching over his shoulder and telling him how to do things.

I’m not in the residential construction business, so I don’t handle those situations.

But isn’t that an inherent part of the job? Home construction is the greatest investment these people will ever make, so they have a right to express their concerns, valid or not.

This. Any communication to the subs/installers needs to go thru the GC. If you talk to the workers on site, the GC will get pissed because your either trying to get the subs to do free work on the side, or you are pointing out deficient work that the GC needs to be aware of.

Construction is like the military in that there's a chain of command. If you jump that chain, it causes shite to go haywire.

The owner has every right to be there doing whatever the frick he wants. Yes, it can be annoying, but that's part of the business. A good contractor / PM will help manage the owner and do his level best to keep the owner out of the labor guys' shite, but sometimes owners just show up. Is what it is.

If it’s my house you’re working on, I want to ensure it’s being done the right way. I just had a major remodel done to part of my home and the crew hated me because I was pointing out all the shite they fricked up. They had to redo things two and three times before they were finally done the right way but I didn’t care. I paid a lot of money for it (and will be paying a lot for years) so I wanted it done right. If I hadn’t been there to oversee it they’d have left it like it originally was.

True, but if a three star general wakes up one day with a wild hair and wants to go see what PFC Beltbuckle out at third fireteam from the end is up to, that's his prerogative.

Absolutely. I’ve stopped multiple mistakes and caught them using materials we didn’t agree to use that are always cheaper of course.

if they didn't, most dickhead contractors would cut corners or screw something up and try and cover it up

they have EVERY right to be there to hold the builders accountable

this is a troll post
