Go with a semi auto shotgun. Less recoil for the little lady.
I prefer and semi, but keep in mind a revolver is more reliable.

I have no idea why people recommend pistols for home defense, especially for women.

I've been around guns and am familiar with shooting guns and I can't hit shite with pistols.

I'd much rather my wife just point and shoot with a shotgun than trying to aim with a pistol.

Shotguns aren't exactly fool proof tools. Shoot a target with a shotgun at around 5 yards and you'll see that the projectiles don't exactly spread out like most people think.

Handguns are good because they allow you to be able to move much more easily from room to room.

A gun is really only going to help you when they are already inside your home. They aren't a deterrent. They just end the threat.

A dog can end the threat, but they also act as a deterrent. They hear the intruder, they smell the intruder, they tell him to stay away while alerting you to the danger.

And dogs can have stopping power. A Black Russian Terrier will dismember a rapist. Believe it.

Agree. Although the fools who believe "racking" the shotgun will scare people off will be along shortly with their horrible advice.

Don't get a handgun.

Get a youth model 20 gauge pump. Load it with buckshot and teach the wife to shoot it.

It is infinitely more effective and easier to shoot than any handgun.

AA12 puts out 20 rounds in 4 seconds and would make a beautiful mess of a robber in your house.

But seriously, a shotgun is much better for home defense if you want to up your chances of hitting a dindu that broke in your house. Especially if you're not an experienced shooter.

single shot 20 gauge shotgun ..... dont really think my wife will be able to use it in case I am not home.

Mossberg Pump Action 12 gauge 18.5 inch barrel..... something my wife can handle if I am away.

FYI, A 20 gauge is smaller than a 12 gauge. Much less recoil. A pump 20 gauge would be ideal.

I'm fully aware

I don't want my wife moving from room to room. If someone is in the house and she is alone, I want her to get my daughter and go sit in a closet with the gun pointed at the door.

Training and confidence can overcome this panic. There is lots of research with police officers and soldiers - in a panic situation, they respond with muscle memory and fall back on their training. If you don't have that training, you have nothing upon which to fall back.

I don't recommend this.

There's a shooting portion of the CHL class and if you can't prove that you're competent with a firearm, they won't issue you a license.

Find someone who knows about firearms or sign up for training. They'll be happy to show you how to operate/fire the weapon and will be able to point you in a direction as to what type of handgun you want.

Getting a CHL is useless unless you practice or get training.

No, and no. Harder to maneuver, bird shot, less capacity, both hands required to operate, no light, inexperienced shooter likely to short stroke, etc....shotgun, the choice of the fools
