Anyone ever do a home air quality test themselves? What are good products to try and how was your overall experience?
TIA

What are you looking to test for?
Posted on 3/16/17 at 3:20 pm to ntgreek00
What are you testing for? Mold? Asbestos?

Mold,
my wife thinks she smells mold in one of the rooms so I want to do this to shut her up.

Mold is ubiquitous.
Mold air testing will find levels of mold indoors, guaranteed.
The best you can do is have a licensed mold contractor collect indoor and outdoor samples at the same time.
If indoor spore counts are lower than the outdoor counts, the indoor air quality is acceptable.
This will run you anywhere from $700 - $1000.
I don't recommend it and neither does the EPA as there are no current standards for indoor airborne concentrations of mold.
Read for yourself at:
EPA site

You're welcome.
FYI - I'm a licensed mold remediation contractor in LA but due to conflict of interest laws, we do not test/consult for mold. Third party firms do all our testing work.
We only remediate.

Where are you located? $700-$1000 is way too high. Also, do not use a mold remediation contractor. Always use 3rd party. Contractors are rarely honest and since they get money if they find mold, they will certainly find mold. Contact a mold inspection company.

I'm located in south LA.
Like I said, we always use third party. We will only use licensed third party consultants.
I'm not sure you read correctly.
$700 is the price we pay (on the low end) for mold licensed consulting firm, four air samples, licensed and certified analytical testing and an analytical report.

Are you a licensed mold remediation contractor in LA?
Posted on 3/16/17 at 3:56 pm to OhMy
Env testing and consulting firm. No removal. Not a contractor.

If you aren't licensed, then what qualifies you to test for mold? What state or federally approved training did you receive?
None, right?
The contractors license is gained by receiving 24 hrs of EPA approved mold training, which includes mold air and mold surface testing sample collection/training.
Stop wasting our time.

Whoah buddy, calm down. I agree with you that he should contact a 3rd party consultant like you suggested, but you're incorrect in assuming there is a certification required to test for mold in LA. To answer your question about what qualifies me I would answer the thousands of clients my firm has provided mold inspections for. Asbestos and Lead testing requires individual certs from LDEQ, not mold. And like I said, if your paying $700-$1000 for 4 cassettes, whether or not that includes the outside baseline, you're paying too much. Don't confuse contractor with consultant.

Wrong.
$425 for surface and air testing. Most companies charge this.

That's more in the ballpark

I didn't write or assume that mold testing requires a license. I know exactly what requires a license and what doesn't.
I wrote that firms with licenses actually have personnel that have been effectively trained by qualified information.
Thousands of inspections doesn't qualify you or your firm for anything. A monkey could collect a mold air or surface sample.
What state or federally approved training have you received to test for mold?
None, I bet.
If you do not have the proper training, you cannot properly consult. It is as simple as that.
I bet your firm provides mold free certificates too.
Another farce.
