The coils they are talking about are in your attic unit. They are really thin metal tubes and fins that get cold.

A fan pulls in air thru your return air filter, over the cold coils and out into your house.

Low freon with help from high humidity causes ice to form and grow to block the air passages thru and on the coil.

This prevents the air from getting the coldness from passing thru the coils and greatly decreases the volume of air too.

Running it in the fan only mode for 20-30 minutes usually melts the ice and you can get an hour or more of decent operation. Until it ices up again.

If your filter was real dirty, That can lower the air flow across the coils and contribute to the freezing issue. Dirty filters can also partially collapse allowing dust to coat the coils and further insulate the coils from the airflow.

When the coil is dirty, it must be cleaned along with having your freon at the right head pressure with unrestricted air flow allowing for the current temperature.

good news is, that it is just low on freon...bad news is that it will freeze up again unless you have some added which will be a couple of hundred bucks...

could be a hell of a lot worse, though...glad you could get your house cooled for the night...

ETA: most every unit of any age has a slow leak and has to be recharged once a year or so...eventually it will get bad enough to warrant repair of the leak...

Depending on where you live, ac service calls range from $75-$100 per hour. Don't fall for a diagnostic /trip call then they hit you to fix it. You almost have to let them do it since they are already there. Right now freon 22 cost are high. They likely will charge you between $30-$50 per pound. Any more or even at 50 they are screwing you. If you are low by 3-4 pounds, you will ice up. Again if they tell you you need 6-8 pounds, they are likely screwing you. Good chance you just need freon and should cost you $250-$300. Ask them first how they will charge you.good luck!!!
