....Dear Facebook

My 6yr old son has really struggled this year. 1st grade at his school, they really start pushing homework, heavy on grades, etc.. Long story short, he is struggling. It's been that way since the year started. We thought maybe it was the teacher, since it was her first year teaching that grade. We've proven that to be false, because we've seen him struggle with basic concepts in homework etc..

The idea of having him repeat first grade is starting to be thrown around by my wife and his teacher. I am not a fan of the idea, but I obviously want what's best for him. But aside of his struggles, he has still managed to keep his head barely above water grade-wise. I'd be more open to the idea if he were absolutely bombing everything. I repeated a grade, but my parents did it in Jr. High. I admit, it was a good thing, I liked the people in my new class better, and it gave me a year to mature. But I am still not a fan of doing it for him.

As long as you aren't doing it just so he'll be bigger for sports.

Better to do it when he is young, than have him fail a grade in high school and all his friends call him a dumbass.

Fourth and fifth grades are where the separation between the smart kids and the not so smart kids really starts to show.
If this kid is struggling in first grade, you should probably invest heavily into the travel ball path.

Do your research. Holding a kid back does more harm than good. There are many interventions available that will take effort.

He’ll be better off down the road as a graduating senior being a year older.

Is he one of the older or younger kids in his grade? If younger I would definitely consider having him repeat. I kept my son back a year in kindergarten and it gave him enough time to mature to the point where he was ready to learn instead of play. He excelled for the rest of his education.

Hell, I wish I had been held back. I was always one of the younger kids in my class, plus was a late bloomer. Started college at 17 and grew almost 3 inches the summer after I graduated high school.

Do it.

Kids mature at different rates. My 30yr old son could hold a conversation with adults at 6/7 years old. My 16 year old is about the maturity level of 13 / 14. We held him back for first grade. Completely different than his brother.

you say he's struggling, barely staying afloat, and you have personal first-hand experience that it was a good thing for you. So why are you still not a fan for him?

If your main hesitation is the stigma behind it and him being seen as an outcast or whatever, just imagine how much worse off he'll be in each subsequent grade not being able to do even the simple things that everyone else in his class can do.

Maybe pre-COVID, I would feel like it shouldn’t be an option unless he was just failing everything. However, COVID shutdowns basically killed a year for these kids and it is really hard to catch up. Schools are getting pressure to catch everyone up and some kids are getting left behind IMO.

Sounds like it might be the right thing here and is actually pretty prevalent now.

Just do it. In the grand scheme of life one year more of, one year later in school is nothing. This could give your kid the reset he needs now when its early and easy that will help him not be struggling to play catch up his entire school life.

Was he born premature? They grow out of the slowness. I have a friend whose daughter was born premature and she didn’t catch up until about 6th grade, but now she’s a lawyer.
