OK, lets take a little trip back in time and see who can name this cannon - era/who used it/etc.

Morning.
As for the cannon. It looks American Civil War Era. AS for who used it, I'm going to say it was in one of the Southern forts. I just visited Fort Morgan (I could have missed it though) and I don't remember seeing it there so I'll say this one was either at Charleston or maybe Savannah?

It is a Confederate 7-inch caliber Brooke rifled cannon, triple banded. The pic shown was taken at Ft. Moultrie.
Here is a period pic of one at Charleston:

Cool. I see you're from Savannah so I'm guessing you've probably made more than one trip to see Fort Pulaski? I got to visit there years ago but it was a raining shitty say. I'd love to go back.

Yeah. Visit there fairly often as my son likes it. Our last one was on July 4th. My wife is stationed over at MCRD Parris Island (retiring in 3 years), so we were glad to get back into the area. I am originally from here, but was away for many years, came back, left again, and am now back for good.
Where are you located? You should definitely make the trip again - that and to Ft. Sumter, which is one of my personal favorites. Fortunately, due to Uncle Sam, we have been able to visit many forts along the East Coast, and those two are our favorites.

I'm located in the north east corner of Alabama. I've been to Sumter but like most of my long road trips those were before the kids came along. They're getting older and the economy is improving now so we'll probably start taking some longer trips.

Ft. Jackson in Savannah is nice, too. Savannah is one of my favorite places, though.

It's a great town. The last time I went it was with ha group of about 10 bikes. We left out on a Thursday morning and took our time and made the whole trip on backroads. We saw some really gorgeous country going through rural Georgia.

Not a bad guess. But it's actually a "clicker" that was issued to American paratroopers just before they dropped into Normandy. They were used as as a way to identify each other in the dark. If you heard something you'd give one click. If it was an American on the other side, he'd reply with two clicks. If you clicked at a sound and you did not get two clicks back, then you knew whatever you'd heard was not friendly.
