History buffs, have you ever heard of Time Commanders?

it's an old BBC show where regular people (team of 4) get to lead forces in historical battles ( Youtube link)
from Wiki:
the engine (and some of the music during the show) is definitely from Rome: Total War, too, for anyone who has played those games
why doesn't the US have shows like this?
from Wiki:
quote:
After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players had to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players were selected as generals, who directed the battle and had access to a strategic map. The other two players were designated lieutenants in the first series, and captains in the second. The units were indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issued commands to programme assistants, who in turn used the game interface to control the units. Troop deployment and battle followed, although in the second series there was a small skirmish conducted as a separate event to acquaint the players with the game mechanics and their units. In the second series the teams also got strategic pauses where they could refine their strategies.

Because our "History" channel is too busy showing trucks driving on ice or affeminate men searching through old peoples junk?

i believe the History Channel did a series on historical battles using the same engine, but it was more of a straight telling of the story

the first one i watched last night was a group of all chicks who had little idea of what they were doing (i'm not being mean. they called calvary "horses", for instance)and they ended up pulling it out. then i watched and ep on marathon with some rather serious guys as generals and they got their asses handed to them.

That's awesome
An American tv show should do something similar

well it's 10+ years old and it only lasted 2 seasons in the UK (with more bam! pow! stuff in season 2 to add intrigue) so i'm not holding up hope

Would be cool to have a place where you could go command battles like this as a game. I don't think it could support itself though.

well you can do it by buying a "Total War" game, for the most part

Biggest problem I see is letting some other British retard physically move my troops. Common knowledge of Napoleonic tactics and you win everytime. Double line them sumbbitches in the center with a mix of crack and new infantry. Attack the flanks with another large unit of crack troops. Force the line all day. Archers in the back.

I mean if we are critiquing semantics, they were closer with "horses" than you were with the site of Jesus' crucifixion.
