I really like the vintage paint scheme used on the diesels. There used to be a WAMX geep stored in Minden that used the same paint color scheme. It looks great.

That's the CP paint scheme from the 50s.

How do they pick the crew for it with these type trips?

It, CP 2816, has a permanent crew that goes with the train as no one is steam qualified these days. A regular crew is also called for whatever territory they are running over as the steam crew isn't qualified over the entire railroad.

UP does the same with the Big Boy I'm sure some here have seen/heard about.

That will come right by my house in Sugar Land.... CPKC has trackage rights on the UP from Beaumont to Rosenberg and from Victoria to Corpus Christi.

Did anyone else besides me make it out to see the Empress?

I didn’t actually see it but when I heard that whistle blowing, I hung my head and cried.

It came through at a pretty brisk pace. It also was a quiet approach - didn't know it was coming until the crossing gates dropped.

I've piloted that locomotive before. 2009 iirc, the last time it was in the US.

That is very cool. In the 90s I got a cab ride up the Saluda Grade (at the time the steepest mainline grade in the US, 4.7%) in Southern Railway 4501. It was being assisted by the Ex Sou GP59 still in the green/gold livery and an RS-3 based slug in the black/gold livery. Three really cool locomotives in one consist.

That Saluda grade is insane. 1.7% is plenty steep enough to get a guy in trouble if he isn't paying attention and 2.2% is considered a very heavy mountain grade.

Recall seeing a video of the N&W 611 struggling/stalling on Saluda and it's a far more powerful locomotive than the 4501.

eta-If you look at the cab pic I posted you may notice something that is different on Canadian water heaters compared to US. The wheel is the reverser. You spin it to adjust valve cut off versus the Johnson bar on US locomotives.

They added a heritage painted SD70ACU to the consist. Must have a healthy grade somewhere they are going or one of the F units is bad order.

Nice pic.

I would like to see it but didn't want to go all the way to Shreveport.
99% of the OT agrees with this sentiment in 99+% of all scenarios.

My wife just showed me a pic of her at 5-6, on a parked Royal Hudson in Vancouver. It ran until 1999 when the boiler gave up.

I was actually on that run.

I used to model the Saluda grade in N scale. I tried to copy the prototype from the mid-80s. The operations both up and downgrade were nuts. Upgrade they stopped and cut a 45 car train into thirds to make the uphill run. It was called the Saluda Triple.

There was a good article in Trains magazine back in the late 80s or 90s describing the history of the line. Can probably find it on ebay if you haven't read it/are interested.

Apparently, it was having difficulty (or at least having to use full power) going up some grades en route so they added the heritage unit.

This vid of it on the Rich Mountain grade shows it and the covered wagons were working fairly hard. That's a big passenger train and I know they don't want to run the steamer hard very often for maintenance reasons. No fully equipped roundhouses out there anymore and it's a long way from home in Calgary.

I have it somewhere piled in with all my other train and modeling magazines that have been untouched for going on 2 decades. I really should get rid of all my old car, train, climbing and other hobby mags. Pre-internet they were a reference library now they are just a fire hazard.

I meant to come back and post this as I thought you might find it interesting. It is a Southern Railway training video for the downhill run on the grade. Back in the 90's I had a copy on VHS I used to model operation on.
