Son just graduated and is deciding between two schools. Small town kid, hard worker, wants to be an anesthesiologist.
LSU - large school, overall better college experience, closer to home, mom and dad are season football ticket holders so we would get to see him plenty in the fall. LSU would cost us roughly 12K annually.
Spring Hill College - small school, size of a large highschool, mainly has club type sports, not my alma mater, in Alabama, they are offering him 101K in scholarships over 4 years. We would still be out of pocket roughly 18K annually.
So roughly 24K difference over 4 years of undergrad.

Ehhh, it depends on what you're looking for in a college experience.

I'd say the atmosphere to succeed and go to med school is better at Springhill. Getting into med school takes extreme dedication and honestly LSU is a lot of fun and can take away some of that focus. However if he goes to Springhill and decides med school isn't for him he can transfer to LSU. I had a buddy that did that.

Spring Hill costs $30k/year?

anesthesiologist.
Send him to LSU. You're going to need that extra scratch.

If he wants to get it free he can do the sugar momma route. Saves you cash while he's getting that older woman thrill.

How would LSU cost 12k annually? That's the price of tuition + room and board. Is your son not getting TOPS or any other scholarships? And how does he expect to become an anesthesiologist if he can't get a couple scholarships to LSU?

I'll admit to a subtle brag first off.

That is a no brainer. Tell him to go to LSU and save the $24K for grad school (if needed) and medical school.

The estimator shows room and board cost 16K annually. Tuition is covered plus a few smaller scholarships. LSU doesn't drop a lot of coin like out of state schools recruiting kids.

So LSU is cheaper, he'd be closer to home and have a better experience? I'm not sure what the discussion is

I'm pushing LSU all the way. Mom and son are humbled a school would offer him 100K in scholarships that frankly has a better academic record than LSU. Also factoring in how long TOPS might be in existence.

Let him go where his heart takes him.

Him going to LSU will help while applying to LSU's med school.
Having gone to Mississippi St for undergrad, and now a student at Samford, I'm saying this from experience: the SEC experience cannot be replicated at a small school such as Samford or Springhill.
LSU is the no-brainer.
