Do you fall in line and watch as they run things into the ground...
Or
Do you nut up and fight it every step of the way and try to make him understand that he is fricking up beyond repair...
Any thoughts based on past experience?

Cash the check. As long as it cashes, you are good.

If it will benefit you, but not negatively effect you?
let them hang themselves.

CYA and let them burn it to the ground. Dumbass bosses will burn you out fast if you try to keep them straight.
I tried your second approach last year and it about wrecked me. Boss still ended up getting her arse handed to her by the higher ups late in the year, and started off this year pretty good, but eventually relapsed into her old ways. I'm just sitting back this year, worrying only about myself and my responsibilities, and waiting on the inevitable hammer that is to come for her.

Dumbshit bosses are usually caused by employees who hold their tongue instead of nutting up and speaking their mind.
If you are right, and can convey that, the company succeeds. If not, the employee goes down withth the company and look like equal dumbshits.

My senior level guys tell me this all the time. Say that in the end, this is all that really matters. Also say, that no matter how good you make things, someone will always come behind you and frock it up....so don't stress much about it..

I had a similar situation....she was (is) an idiot, couldn't do my job and wanted to do things that we had already tried---trying to reinvent the wheel.
We all fought back, the admins we slow to see how stupid she truly was and how she was hurting our department's morale, but it finally caught up with her.

Normally true in the business world, exact opposite in public education.

I've seen a lot of cases where they promoted crappy teachers to administration just to get them out of the classroom.

YOu better know who their alliances are. If they are tight with upper management/owners then your best bet is to lay low, but pick your battles wisely.
Find an ally or two that has ties to bigger bosses who have open ears and minds.
Don't know if you are in big company or not, but playing politics, knowing your enemies, finding allies is key.

Don't worry, McDonald's corporate won't let your boss totally embarrass the franchise.

Casually flash a hand gun one day in the parking lot, just make sure you are super passive aggressive though
