I was listening to Jordy Culotta this morning talking about what happened last night at a high school jamboree at Woodlawn. The first game was Istrouma vs Helen Cox. A Helen Cox player got hurt on the second play of the game dislocating his leg and he was screaming in agony and there was no EMS in sight. It took them 25-30 minutes to get there.

Trainers from both teams had to pick the player up as a stretcher and put him on the Istrouma sideline since they had a air cast. After EMS arrived they had to go through a maze in the parking lot that was packed and get out to observe the injury.

After that they had to go back to the ambulance and get the stretcher and walk back to the other side of the field that took another fifteen minutes. How the hell does that happen and there had to be some kind of miscommunication to not have EMS at the game before it started.

Serious question, who covers the costs of high school athletes surgeries and such?

For example if they don't have insurance. Does the school foot the bill or is it tough shite too bad?

There usually is but there’s not always dozens of free ambulances available on Friday and Thursday nights to sit and wait.

It should not happen and games should not be allowed to start. Just seems like too much chance and liability. If it was a head/neck injury it would be a shite storm.

I thought an ambulance was required to be at every high school game?

There was a time when Acadian Ambulance was present at local games. Maybe they gave that up. I can’t remember EMS being stationed at games.

Now EMS should have responded faster. We pay taxes for service.

EMS staffing is a pretty bad situation right now. I got out 8 years ago and from what I've read and been told by friends still in it, their run volumes are much higher and manpower even less. EMS providers are probably choosing to keep units available for calls in the cities and not set aside for a football game. That and probably can't find off duty people to work those games anymore.

I thought high school games couldn't start/proceed until an EMS unit was on site? This was nearly 20 years ago but I remember a player breaking a leg, being taken away by EMS, and the game not resuming until another EMS unit arrived and was on standby.

That’s not good but not surprising either.

Do schools think EMS agencies have an unlimited amount of ambulances? Can't imagine having 2 units tied up for a HS football game.

Depends on call volume in area. They used to station trucks for games, but if a call came in and they were just sitting /or all available truck may have been in service.... Hard to justify sitting for a hypothetical call vs responding to actual calls.

So the trainers stabilized it and took care of him. He probably got better care at the moment. All the ER that the ambulance would take him to is x ray and refer to ortho Monday.

On a Friday, there’s probably 7-12 games in EBR? I’m guessing. That’s a lot of ambulances and paramedics.

The public, same as the deadbeats who go to the ER for a pregnancy test and don't pay the bill.

Depends on the injury, he may have went to the OR for stabilization.

There is a school policy that covers them in excess of any private policies so if they do not have personal coverage the school policy kicks in immediately after small deductible is met.
