Like most everyone else has said, enjoy the outdoors.

Boulder with the Flatirons (and the Mork & Mindy House). Take the drive up Flagstaff mountain for some gorgeous views of the city. Also, in Boulder, check out the Pearl Street Mall. Very interesting collection of folks there.

Towards Golden is Lookout Mountain - more gorgeous views, and it is also the final resting place of Buffalo Bill.

Rocky Mountain NP is a must see. We drove into Estes Park through Big Thompson Canyon. An absolutely gorgeous introduction to the area.

I like these ideas about hiking and white water rafting...that is what I am hoping to get into.

Bringing the wife too...should we try and stay somewhere other than downtown Denver for the first few days or just rent a car?

If you want to do the hiking and rafting thing definitely just rent a car and head west.

For example that is what I did over Thanksgiving. Spent one night in each of these places and moved on: Breck, Leadville, Boulder, Estes Park(actually 2 nights here), Denver.

Stay the night at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. Reenact scenes from the Shining. Ask for room 401.

The Stanley

Eat at the Atomic Cowboy. It has the Denver Biscuit Company and Fat Sully's Pizza/Bar in the same building.
