Haven't smoked a cigarette since Mardi Gras - Did I break the addiction?

I was on my 9th straight year of smoking cigarettes, and decided it was time to quit. I stopped cold turkey on Mardi Gras day this year. I haven't smoked a cigarette since. My roommate smokes, and I drink frequently around smokers. I don't really have the urge anymore; I guess I'm lucky. Would you consider an addiction gone after no urges and haven't smoked in months?

Also, as far as doctor visits go, would you say you are a former smoker or just say you don't smoke at all? I never really understood how that works. Do they report that to insurance?

I would expect 2-3 slip ups, then you will finally break the chains.

have you had sex since mardi gras?

have you been drunk to the point of spots in your memory since mardi gras?

have you endured any major stress in that time?

all of the above will drive you back to vice.

Not a doctor but I read your body can still have side effects around 7 years after quitting. I suppose it is dependent on how long you smoked.

Yes.

Same thing happened to me when I eventually quit in college. I am now grossed out by cigarettes.

Always tell your doctor as much truth as you can.

Insurance would care more about tests, like blood tests. And if you haven't smoked in a while, nicotine won't be there, so that wouldn't harm you.

I quit for New Years resolution in 2015/2016. Have not gone back. What I notice is the urge only hits me when I'm drinking in social situations. Otherwise nothing. I feel very lucky to not have overwhelming urges.

But the downsides: I don't feel miraculously awesome like I thought I would. In fact I seem to be getting allergy flare-ups and minor ailments more often now than when I smoked. Also I gained about 10 or 15 pounds and I can't get rid of it.

Overall, a pretty good trade for maybe avoiding cancer though.

The next time an unusual event occurs that causes you extreme stress/anxiety/remorse etc.

That will be the real test.

Weight gain is normal. Cigarettes are an appetite suppressant.

The other stuff though I can't relate. A few months after I quit, I felt noticeably better.

And there have been times I've been super drunk in the last 9-10 years and taken adderall or something and tried to smoke a cigarette with friends and it makes me feel terrible. Even the next day.

My body straight up rejects it now. Its great.

Yes to all of the above. Probably less so for the last one though.

Never touch another one.

Not one.

The hook is still set deep down in you.

Not one. Ever

I quit the same way . Just did it . That was 21 years ago, never had another cigarette. Some people just do it . You are a master of the castle type.

That said, I have dreams all the time where I've relapsed and am wondering what happened and how long ago I relapsed. Pretty weird and a sign of how deeply it's ingrained in my psyche.

You can lose the weight and clean out better.
Buy a vitamix. Use a juicer.

Eat fruit on weekend.

You will cough up globs.

I've had that dream recently where I smoked a cigarette and woke up pissed off at myself and felt like I had something to hide.

Also, thanks everyone for sharing with me. I've been extremely proud of myself, but have never talked with anyone about it.

I'm a year and my body still gets a very strong craving at least one day a month. Not for long though. I try to stay away from all drinking so I won't push my luck.
