You'd probably be okay with any individual stealing from a vending machine too.

This brings me to the question of who's responsible if the vending machine eats your 50 cents.. The place where the vending machine is or the vending machine company or nobody?

I hate it when some poor folk bug me about losing their 50 cents like I'm responsible because I work someplace there's a vending machine.

But the theft may not justify the cost of the prevention...a lawsuit for the machine falling on someone (even if that someone was trying to steal) is another story.

Exactly, but you're forgetting about vandalism repair costs. People are less likely to damage the machines in any way if they think there's no hope of getting anything out. And even if they crack the glass from the outside somehow, the machine is still operable.
