Its happens because your body has lost so much sleep that the brain starts to dream while your awake. It's all peripheral. You can't turn to face them. Grey and white faces and objects appearing and reappearing at random. The objects are about the size of your hands or smaller. It's like a trance. It's not the least bit scary or uncomfortable.
