More expensive and shittier at the same time

We went from a small two bedroom apartment in NYC to a very large house in 2020. I still want to throw up when I think about our furniture bill.

Went furniture shopping for new living room furniture and it was going to be 15k for couch, recliner, 2 swivel chairs and a couple end tables.
Still got all my old raggity arse shite

Paid 3k for a dresser and 2 nightstands a month ago. It's ridiculous what half decent quality stuff costs.

My good friend and his family owned a furniture store in La. Deals I got were insane, but the sold it. Sucks!! There is so much markup on furniture.

Wife just spent $5000 on new bedroom set not including mattresses.
In '22 we bought a lazboy couch and we were going to get a loveseat and recliner to match later on. We got the couch because it was the largest price, and we were going to get the less expensive pieces later on. Went back to get another piece and the single recliner was more than we paid for the couch. We still only have the couch and our older furniture.

Yes. And it's 110% Brandon's fault.

When we moved back to NOVA this past September we bought almost everything on Facebook Marketplace. With careful shopping and patience you save a ton of money furnishing a house.

Before I got into education I used to work for a furniture company. I got to go to market to buy the furniture for the furniture store. The mark up is insane. Also the quality of furniture has declined over the years.
You also get what you pay for.
My best advice is to go to have a plan before you ever walk into a furniture store.
I would go to every Estate Sale in your area and try to buy as much as you can there. Many families do not really know the value of the furniture. I myself have purchased many gems that way.
Also order direct from the company and skip the furniture store if you can.
The only problem is if your wife wants a certain type of fabric it is difficult to see the quality of the fabric online.
Do your homework and shop around just like you would for any major purchase.
I hope this helps.
One last bit of advice.
Try to purchase a sofa with a bed built into it.
They last much longer because of the extra support required for the bed mechanism.

I finally parted with a bunch of old shite several years ago, from cars, to appliances to furniture. Mistake.

Furniture store markup is insane.

You aren't lying. And it's all made with polyurethane and plywood with the thinnest of thin veneers on top.

Who knew wreckless spending would have consequences. Fiance and I make a good amount and I have no idea how people making less than 120k or so household wise buy things now.
Best part is a ton of the furniture is cheap shite that won't last 5 years.

Please define insane.
And if it’s so insane (by whatever your definition might be), does that mean that there is opportunity in the industry?

I don't own anything not made of solid wood.
Particle board furniture just doesn't cut it.
