I'm sure that most of the countries with satellites have more important shite to look for than debris in the ocean. The agencies that would operate the kind of satellites that you're talking about aren't going to pull them off of surveillance ops to go looking for an airplane.

Considering nothing has been found to indicate that it is in the water and nothing has been found to prove it landed somewhere isn't it kind of 50/50?

No, it's not 50/50. The likelihood that a group could hide a plane that size and prevent anyone on board from notifying the outside world I think tips the scales a bit. Not saying it's impossible, but maybe 1%.

MH370 search faces tough next phase

The next phase of the hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet MH370 will be very challenging in places.

Detailed information being gathered about the shape of the ocean floor west of Australia confirms the seabed in some locations to be extremely rugged.

Two vessels - the Fugro Equator and the Zhu Kezhen - are currently mapping an area covering 60,000 sq km.

This survey will guide a metre-by-metre search using towed instruments and submersibles.

This is likely to get under way towards the end of September.

The Australian authorities have warned that this could take a year to complete.

Until they find the damn thing, we barely have a clue. There's no explanation that makes any sense, so I'm going to be open to anything and everything.

FWIW my theory is that it's at the bottom of the IO in rough area they're currently searching, but by no means am I certain.

Ship wrecks on that lie on the ocean floor for hundreds of years have been discovered when there was very little documentation of where they were or what happened to them.

There's 0 supporting evidence that this plane has crashed, at least from what has been released.
It wouldn't be overly difficult to have hijacked the plane, cut off communications, land it, and kill all the passengers.
There was an article a few weeks about about a large sum of money being passed between passengers accounts then withdrawn.

There's a lot more to this story than the place crashed and can't be found.

And where is your proof of this?

A few of the politards have been speculating that since ISIS is in control of an airport, they might buy the missing Malaysian jet from a friendly neighbor, fly it into Iraq undected, then use it to attached a western country somehow.

Yes, they will find it. When? Here's when:

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars ….

They hired a private company to search, which begins next month.

I'm not ignorant enough to believe they couldn't find plane wreckage somewhere

Yes you are. Sorry.

First off, satellites can't be "repositioned" into a different orbit. There are probably only one or two that ever had a chance of spotting anything at all, if that.

Second, if the plane did go down in the southern Indian Ocean, that's one of the most storm-tossed seas on Earth. Oil slicks don't last long under those conditions, nor can a satellite see one through clouds anyway.

Third, oceans are big. Really big. No, it isn't easy to spot something on the surface that you're looking for unless you happen to be looking at that particular patch at the right moment. So even on the rare day that the waves weren't 20 feet high or more with overcast skies (see #2) it's unlikely a satellite would have been in position to spot it (see #1).

Satellites are much better able to pick up radio broadcasts b/c you don't need a direct line of sight (that's why they are called "broadcasts") and that's why they were able to get transponder signals. But spotting an oil slick with a sat is virtually impossible.

Usually by accident, and not in that particular ocean, which is one of the most difficult to sail in.

Uh, killing all the passengers and crew would silence them pretty easily.

ISIS has it. They now also have an airport with a 10,000' runway.

The captain shut off the oxygen to the passenger cabin. The passengers were DOA.
