From what I understand, its not a test you can spend one day studying for and expect to pass. Its designed so that not just anyone can pass it, otherwise everyone would become a notary. If you study effective & cover all the material you should be fine.. It might even take you two times to pass it, but if it does at least you the second time you will know what to expect.

A notary in LA has the power to do most things an attorney can do civilly. Like others have mentioned, they can convey immovable property, testaments, etc..... Their powers go beyond simply witnessing signatures.

I am a notary in La.

I can marry people

Are you also a minister or JOP?

Or has the law been changed to allow a Louisiana notary to perform marriages?

Things must have change a lot; I took it around 2004.

I read a book, which was given to me by a friend who took a NP class, during a Monday biology class that I usually slept through. Then, I took the test that afternoon.

It was harder than I expected, but I passed.

Every non lawyer I've talked to says it's harder than the Bar. I laugh in their face.

But...but...my cousin's neighbor said lawyers just fill out forms for the clerk and stuff.

I know someone who is a notary that is probably fractions of a point from being "challenged" and she passed it

I work with quite a few notaries, all of which have been notaries for over 20 years. They're of average intelligence. From everything I've heard in the last 5-10 years, the certification in LA has become incredibly difficult. Multiple co-workers who have passed securities exams (Series 7, 63, 65, etc.) on the first try said the notary exam is a different anima altogether from a difficulty standpoint.

From what I hear it's easier to go to 3 years of law school and pass the bar.

I went to a four hour class when I was like 23 and took the test right after and it was a piece of cake. I didn't even need it, I just took it in case I ever needed it

Apparently Louisiana changed their exam two weeks ago to a fully open book format
