I'm considering that lifestyle.

I spent several months as a vagrant/hitchhiker/hobo shortly after dropping out of Alabama.

I always had a place to go back to, and luckily the wanderlust lost its sheen after a while. Nothing like hanging out with the bums on the banks of the Willamette.

A kid I grew up with is. He now whacks it regularly in the bathroom of the McDonald's we used to ride our bikes to as children. Think about that before making your final decision.

I was "couch-crashin'" homeless briefly after the hurricane but rectified that within a few weeks.

There is an entire culture of train kids. People who haven't bathed in years, rotting teeth, playing shitty punk music, wondering if the bull is going to frick 'em up or not.

Anyone who's been through a messy split probably has been down this road even if for just a few days.

ELLE put me up one night during mine in 2011.

I am homeless. I post from the apple store every day. They don't kick me out because homeless people and hipsters are indistinguishable

Yes, when I sold my house in under a day.

It sucked, it was cold, rainy and windy.

The dude that bought it gave me a refrigerator box that I still reside in.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Had you gotten a degree from Alabama, it probably wouldn't have gotten you much more.

Don't worry, my bachelor's is from a much, much worse institution in a subject that should absolutely not be a course of study.

When you associated with these folks, be it while on trains or just socializing in a group or whatever, how did you handle the smell situation? It seems like their breath would be enough to knock you down. Were they offended by people's reacitons to their odor or did they understand? Did people make comments like "omg, you smell like death I can't breathe" or was it something frowned upon like commenting on someone's physical imperfections?

At that point, I stank like a skunk's a-hole, too. My dental hygiene was only marginally better. I just accepted it as part of the deal.

right but surely at SOME POINT along this journey, you'd be in reasonably close convo with one of these vagrants and probably have the smell be overpowering to where you noticeably have to back up or hold your breath, I assume. What is the reaction at that point..they understand your plight or are they mildly offended?

Nodding off from the next bang.

Most understand that your typical person will be repulsed (they revel in this, in fact), but they expect someone who is 'in' to just accept it. Telling people they should clean up (on many levels) is frowned upon.
