Thinking of going in July. Good experiences, bad experiences, tips, do's don't's.

Buddy of mine just got back, he said it was beautiful. Just make sure you go before the summer heat sets in.

Just got back a couple of days ago.
1. Hiking poles - get them
2. Good hiking shoes. Many wear tennis shoes and it sucks - lack of support.
3. Get a jet boil or two.
4. Lots of snacks
5. Have a mule carry your bag, you carry a day pack with 2L of water for each person.
You book the mule before you go.
6. Start early as hell. It 1.5 hrs from the time you turn on 18 to the trailhead. Fill up before.
7. We stayed at the Hualapai Lodge the night before (Peach Springs, Az)
8. Bring Pedialyte packets.
9. Bring a GoPro
10. The village is 2 miles from the campsite but they have many of the basic necessities and food if you Roger something. There is also a food hut at the campsite if you're camping.
11. Mooney Falls and Beaver Falls are difficult to get to. If you don't like hiking about 40-50ft at a 90 degree angle on chains and ladders some... then you can just hang out at Havasu Falls. It's beautiful there too. The hike to Mooney and Beaver is kinda freaky.
I'll try to post pics as well.

July will be too hot. Bottom of the canyon is around the same temps as in PHX.
July is also during monsoon season so greater chances of storms and flash floods.

Did it for the third time in April, I can't recommend it highly enough. A GoPro is a must-have for the trip.

But would you go in July?

Good point. I have a 10 year old so I may put this off for an Easter vacation hike.

Thinking maybe Yosemite may be the spot for July. They are having record waterfalls this year. Most water in over 25 years is what the Rangers are saying.

With a kid, I'd def wait until a cooler month. It was in the mid 90s during the day and 75ish at night.
The camping area is shaded though. So that is helpful. It's not like you're baking in the sun the entire time.
The hike is tough. Downhill first. If you don't want to do the hike out you can always get up early the day you leave and get in line to take the helicopter out. It's $90 a person.

Probably not, about 20 yrs ago a group of us hiked rim-to-rim-to-rim in June and it kicked my arse, never again. All three of my trips to Havasupai were in March or April. I actually have my nephew and his daughter in town this week and neither have been to the GC so heading there on Friday- we will knock out Sedona, Flagstaff and the GC in one day. I think this is probably my 10th trip there.

I've never done the hike myself but have many friends that have done it. All of them loved it. One day I'll hopefully do it.
Friends have told me you can helicopter back up as well. I think they said that that was at the village. You just have to get there early cause the flights fill up quick. And tribal people get first priority, so it's not a guarantee that you get a flight. At least that is what I was told by some that have done it.

I've been to GC I think 5 times now. Always just south rim trips.....have never gotten to actually hike into it.

They told us they run the helicopter until everyone is off.
Natives do go first. But people usually get in line around 6am so they can be one of the first out.

I get corralled into going to the GC every time I have friends or family in town who have never been. I'm at the point now where if I'm not hiking or rafting the Colorado after about an hour of checking out the various lookouts and then grabbing lunch at Tovar I'm ready to split- been there, done that. That being said, everyone needs to see the GC at least once and it's cool seeing the reactions of first-timers. There really is nothing like it (that goes for Sedona as well).

Same. Done Grand Canyon Railroad trips from Williams a couple of those GC trips as well. Those are actually not too bad.
