With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Darren Almendarez, 51. An agency veteran of 23 years, he served in our auto theft unit for the past year. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his wife, children, his extended family, colleagues & friends.

Heartbreaking. A graduate of Milby HS in the East End, he loved being a deputy. He and his wife were out buying groceries; last night was his sister’s bday and he was planning to have a cookout today in celebration. As the couple exited the store with the cart, it appears he

spotted suspects attempting to steal his truck’s catalytic converter. He told his wife to run, as he encountered multiple suspects. Gunfire was exchanged between he and suspects. Sadly, Deputy Almendarez was fatally wounded. May he Rest In Peace. #HouNews

He was off duty. Why would he intervene at all? This is why we have insurance. And by the way, the criminals only did this because of the United States' long history rooted in white supremacy

This has become an epidemic here. Those meth heads need the death penalty if caught.

pretty damn brazen to steal a cat converter in a parking lot of an open store!

The deputy shot two of them. Third one is on the loose.

Criminals know they won't suffer any consequences thanks to our progressive DAs/judges.

A lot.

$5 says the perps were out on bond for other crimes.

Why is the market so hot for Cat converters?

Because of what they contain. Platinum, palladium, etc. are very, very valuable these days.

ETA: For example palladium is trading at $2,600/ounce today. Obviously street prices are lower than that, but it gives you an idea. I am sure they make a few hundred off of each CC. It is the trashy scrapyards and other businesses buying these that really need to be the target of law enforcement.

Then who is buying them? Seems like they should be forced to show a VIN for any turned in

Sketchy junkyards, etc. I'm not entirely sure, but there obviously is a market for it somewhere. The same type of place that strips stolen cars and other items. The kind that does not care about VIN's, serial numbers, or proof of title.

Harris County and the various Harris County Constable divisions seemingly lose a deputy every few weeks. They’ve lost at least a handful this year and we’re only in April.

The suspects were in a Nissan Altima with paper plates. Typical.
