On this day in 1940 an American institution opened their doors. And the rest is history.

Which is ironic, considering those who've kept them in business this long usually don't make it past 64.

mcdonald's did not succeed b/c they were cheap. they succeeded b/c they were fast.

it was convenient in the 80's...and the food and service was better.
You can go to Brewbachers/Georges and get a much better burger and fries for only a dollar or 2 more than McDonalds...their prices have gone up while the product has gone down.

I completely agree
I live in a nice area and I saw the mcdonalds and it is pristine, the staff friendly...it has more of an 80s feel to it.

I remember when they sold draft beer and had gold tinfoil ashtrays. Ah, the good old days.

maybe you misunderstand the hook of fast food
no one is looking for an artisan crafted burger...they want a "good" meal, but more importantly "fast"
it helps when you're not surrounded by the dregs of society.
in n out burger has a friendly staff, they employ teens and young adults rather than the morons who want a "living wage" , their restaurants are clean and its one of the few fast food drive thrus where sitting inside is actually an option

In the '90s I read in USA Today that 25% of all black people in America eat at McDonald's at least once a week.
A few years ago I was eating at a hospital cafeteria. Cliches notwithstanding, the food wasn't bad at all. There was baked chicken and fish. They even had some passable gumbo. Not flavored like a gourmet would insist on (hospitals force you to add your own salt and pepper, for obvious reasons) but certainly edible.
Some black guy was standing near the checkout chatting up the cashier. He finally left, but only after announcing in a loud voice, "I'm goin' to McDonald's and get me sumthin' to EAT!"

succeedED
past tense...they're slow because of a bloated menu, and they have a pretty narrow focus of who they want to sell their food to...it's all about the dollar menu now. it's all about the fruit drinks, all of that bullshite
I say "narrow" in terms of diversity, not scope. I realize the number of retarded, poor and fat people is larger than I would like to admit
