Norway builds statues to Vikings. England has statues of kings and knights that preceded their present form of Gov't.

There are statues of Marie Antoinette in France.

I'm sure just about every civilization has monuments of their past history.

Discussion is never a problem. Debate is healthy.

When did the confederates win and rule over all of America? Those situations aren't really comparable. Unless your comparison is to Washington and Jefferson, it makes no sense.

I dont see the problem with localities honoring the people they believe fought bravely in whatever conflict

I don't see the problem either, but if the country who prevailed wants them down, that's pretty much what happens. Like I said, I get why the old CSA erected the statues, but if the USA wants then gone, they'll be gone. History is written by the winners, so to speak.

It's worth mentioning again that I don't care about Confederate statues one way or the other. I understand why people want them up and why people want them down. Let the local populations sort it out.

So on this board I've seen people defend the KKK/nazi people's rights to march, but this discussion is the one hurting America

Using that line of thinking, wouldnt it be appropriate to have it in the regions they did rule over?

No one is proposing putting confederate statues outside of the south.

Prime example of when a debate is not "healthy". Thanks.

Had he qualified his statement with "intelligent" and/or "informed" I would agree. However, not all discussions are good and not all debates are healthy.

Why are you talking about Confederates when the thread is clearly about Presidents?

Some sketchy history behind when they were put up, but like another poster said, if the local population wants it, sure.

If they want it down, take it down.

If our nation must go to extremes this course is much to superficial. Focusing on slavery is looking at a post settlement issue. If we must correct all wrongs by applying today's laws, morals and ethical standards we must all leave this country and give it back to the Native Americans. This course would be beneficial to the environment and climate change.

I'd love to see the votes that said all this stuff needs to come down.

And let's not even get started on the vandalism that happened in NC.

Read the last sentence. I wasn't sure. But of course you're so eager to jump on my nuts.
