Looking to make an entry into the lottery this year. Has anyone gone through this process? Any tips? Also what was your experience like?
I've been to Yosemite before, we just did not summit Half Dome.

Wait, there's a lottery to climb a mountain?
Why not just go there and climb that shite yourself?
I can't see the draw if it's hundreds of people at a time like Everest.

Half Dome is the name of my favorite wounded-in-combat porno actor

That's only during the busiest times right?

I'm not sure how I feel about it either. A buddy wants to do it, and asked me about it. From the pictures I've seen, it's a single file of people going up. I'm not sure what to think about that.

I'm not sure. I've done zero research on it thus far. Just putting out the feelers.

If I wanted to wait in a line with a bunch of other people I'd go to Disneyworld.
I have to think there are mountains out there, maybe not as massive or whatever, but that just you and your buddy or a small group could summit on your own terms, lottery be damned.

Yuuup. Not much of a problem tbh.

Looks like it would suck.

Do Rainier instead, less traffic.

You get the best view from glacier point anyway

A buddy of mine went up last summer. He's a hiker of moderate ability and said the hike there was pretty tough. Said it was worth doing, but not nearly as amazing as several of the other areas we have hiked.

Half dome is 17 mile roundtrip hike at elevation (valley floor is 4,000 ft above sea level).
Those cables on the dome itself, no thank you.

I did it over Labor Day weekend last year. Got picked on the lottery and did it. My wife wanted no part of it.
Great trails at Yosemite.

Cables are usually up June through early October.
This chart shows Half Dome lottery applications by day of the week for 2015.
quote:
Permits to hike to the top of Half Dome are required seven days per week when the cables are up (as called for in the Half Dome Plan in order to protect wilderness character, reduce crowding, protect natural and cultural resources, and improve safety).
A maximum of 300 hikers are allowed (about 225 day hikers and 75 backpackers) each day on the Half Dome Trail beyond the base of the subdome. Instead, apply using the lotteries described on this page.
quote:
During the preseason lottery, 225 permits are available for each day. The application period for this lottery is from March 1 through March 31 (eastern time). Applicants will receive an email with lottery results in mid-April (or can get results online or by calling Recreation.gov). We are planning on the Half Dome cables being up May 27, 2016 through October 11, 2016, but these dates could change based on conditions.
quote:
Approximately 50 permits will be available each day by lottery during the hiking season. These permits will be available based on the estimated rate of under-use and cancellation of permits

If you get selected, do you get one or two passes?

Can you please elaborate on the other areas you've hiked that you would consider to eclipse Half Dome? I've done Angel's Landing and the Garden Wall Trail in Glacier.
My buddy is specifically interested in "summiting" something.
