Guys ski trip planned on same weekend as wife's birthday...what to do?

My buddy (not Kalunda) was invited to go on a ski trip, but the trip falls on the same weekend as his wife's birthday. He desperately wants to go on this trip but worries how his wife will feel about him being out of town for her birthday.
How should he play this?

Send her on a trip elsewhere, cancel his trip and/ or hire a divorce lawyer

Wife has birthday every year.
How often do you get a guys ski trip?

He should ask her. Feel it out. As devastating as it sounds, I'm sure the wife wouldn't mind spending a birthday with just her friends.

Be important enough to have a say in when the ski trip will be.

Why not change the weekend of the trip?

tell his wife that he is going on the trip and celebrate her birthday the weekend before.
My bachelor party trip was on my wifes birthday....

1. Please anchor.
2> Depends on how many birthdays the Lovely Hen has had. At some point, say around 35, the birthdays should pass by silently. 'He' can celebrate before with a huge party to make up for it.
3. Where are they going skiing?
eta...GREAT thread....POTY so far.

Would the wife really not be understanding of this? As crappy as my ex turned out to be, she would absolutely want me to go out and have a good time and not worry about something as mundane as a birthday. So long as I remembered to tell her happy birthday and probably have the kids make her something she was happy (and same went for me as well on my birthday).

Only a woman would get upset over this kind of shite.

Better to beg for forgiveness than to ask permission.

This happened to me 2 years ago, almost exact same scenario.
It was a bachelor party ski trip (I was in the wedding and its one of my closest friends I've known for literally my entire life) on the exact same weekend as my wife's birthday.
She wasn't happy about it, but she knew I had to go. I went, had a great time, my wife spent the weekend with her girlfriends and had a good time.
However, she still brings it up occasionally as ammunition during a spat.
Edit: I'm making this seem like my wife is a huge bitch which is not the case. She wasn't thrilled with it but wasn't mad about it either. Just likes to bust my chops about it

If he's smart, it's before.

Share the wife. Easy answer.

Married men have no business going on "guytrips". What the hell world are some people living in.

Be honest with the wife, and plan an awesome day for her (on a different day) that she knows about in advance, even if it happens after her actual birthday. Before is preferred though. If he has time, he should go all out for her the weekend before.

No win here.
You skip out on trip, well, you've missed a ski trip.
You skip out on wife's birthday and she's not only cutting you off but she's getting the Birthday BBC!
