This is one of the main reasons I never got into RC planes. A good friend of mine use to build these and was big time into RC planes. I remember back in the late 90's he spent months and lord knows how much money building a Spitfire. This thing was huge, had a 6' wingspan. First time he took it out he had a fuel line failure or something and the thing crashed and burned. All those months of work and all that money just to fly a plane like 10 minutes.

You should go to the oshkosh Wisconsin air show some year put on by the EAA, experimental aircraft association. Most every plane you can think of falls under that category. There's some crazy homebuilt planes there every year I'm amazed how they're built, let alone that their builder flew them to oshkosh to show off. Wouldn't surprise me if the b17 in the OP is there at some point.
