Met with opposition from JSU supporters due to "racial undertones"

quote:

need to go over to Jackson State, on their campus, and build them a stadium that they can enjoy on that great urban campus of theirs, but that is valuable land that old stadium is on and we need it,” Bryant said.

I don't see how VMS hasn't been torn down already. It hosts, at most, 12 events a year, extremely outdated, horrible part of town, and probably hasn't been filled to capacity since the Walter Payton days. Mississippi has even moved its state championship games from there.

JSU needs a smaller, on campus stadium, but the taxpayers of Mississippi don't need to foot the complete bill.

The TigerDome that they proposed was nice, but ludicrous.

Where is this opposition due to racial undertones that you speak of? I read the whole article and didn't see anything.

There is none. JSU wants a new stadium, but they want it to be fully funded by the state and they want the $250 million dome that I posted pictures above. The state wants to chip in $40 million and build something like Tulane and UNC Charlotte have.

Ultimately, VMS is coming down. I understand JSU will need a place to play football, but they can't continue to hold out for the TigerDome. Its simply too much. If they continue to play hardball, Bryant might have them playing at Hughes Field.

It's not in the article, it's what you hear when you live here.

I still have nightmares about John Bond running all over us in that stadium.

I've never seen actual renderings. Where do they expect to put this?

The whole race card thing on this one isn't really fair. Here's the bullet points.

1. State owns Veterans Memorial Stadium, located in the heart of the medical corridor.
2. State gives control of the aging stadium to Jackson State University, who plays their football games there but rarely fills half of it.
3. University Medical Center continues to grow, is landlocked. Stadium site becomes focus of expansion.
4. State tells JSU they will help build an appropriate stadium on campus. Cite Tulane and UNC Charlotte as examples of 30,000 seat stadiums appropriate, and that would be the jewels of SWAC Football.

5. JSU wants TigerDome at a cost of $250 million.

6. State says thats too expensive.
7. JSU says that's what we want if you want your land.

And thats where we are.

This in buckets...after the last 2.5 years of dealing with their financial department, I don't want them in charge of a large lump sum of funding. I've never seen anything like it in my life.

They actually have a pretty nice campus over there but I don't see how they could afford to build a stadium like that. There just isn't enough room. It's already crammed pretty tight.

Compared to the other SWAC schools, JSU is pretty nice. Lots of newish buildings. However, their president is certifiably insane, their administration is corrupt and inept and JSU is known as "Just Show Up" in academic ranks and they still have a 20% graduation rate.

They want the state to foot the bill and build the nicest stadium in Mississippi on JSU's campus?

Agreed. 60K capacity for VMS is way too big for JSU, but the asking for a dome hilarious.
