The new proposal for the I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River will still include tolls, but they will be much lower, new Gov. Jeff Landry said.

Landry said while speaking at the Chamber Southwest banquet Thursday night that the new proposal will cost 25 percent less to build and will include a 15 percent equity position for Imperial Calcasieu, under which the area will get 15 percent of any profits made.

Tolls have been reduced across the board by 26 percent, he said. Sixty percent of the people paying the tolls will be from outside Louisiana, he said.

Landry contrasted the old proposal with the new - under the old, a large pickup truck would have paid a $3.82 toll. Under the new proposal, the toll for a large pickup truck will be 25 cents.

Are there any other toll roads on a major US interstates in the country? I think I remember one in Florida years ago.

quote:

The way current law reads it is unlawful for a government agency to apply a toll to any stretch of interstate highway that does not currently have a toll already in place.

Ahhh, typical Louisiana gonna bend the law a bit...

quote:

Here's where the "trickeration" or "bending of the law" comes into play. The rule only covers existing roadways. But as of right now a new I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge and a new I-10 bridge in Lake Charles don't exist, so the rule would not apply to those structures. But, when they are built it's quite possible tolls will be coming to those structures when construction is completed.

This is a federal highway. States can toll federal highways? And wouldn't most of the funding for a new I-10 bridge come from the feds?

Are they set in stone and nobody can ever raise them?

Tolling is how an entity gets paid for the construction and/or maintenance of a bridge if it doesn't have full funding.

Tollbooth operators union ruined that. They wanted to make sure someone needed to be there to make change.

Tolls come in many forms. I was in the DFW area about 6 months ago and recently got a invoice in the mail b/c I apparently drove in toll lanes where there. I'm sure the folks from that area know about that shite, but I sure as hell didn't.

Title 23 of the United States Code (Highways) includes a general prohibition on the imposition of tolls on Federal-aid highways. However, Title 23 and other statutes have also carved out certain exceptions to this policy. Two mainstream federal tolling programs and two pilot programs offer states opportunities to use tolling to generate revenue to support highway construction activities and implement priced managed lanes on federal-aid highways.

I-95 in Virginia between Richmond and DC used to be tolled, but I think they took that off.

The northern part of the New Jersey turnpike is on I-95.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike covers parts of I-70, I-76, and I-95.

The Ohio Turnpike covers parts of I-76, I-80, and I-90.

Just looked it up. There is a general probation to tolls on federal highways but there are carveouts.

fricking insane that an interstate will require a toll. It’s not like they don’t collect taxes for that or anything

Get with a good lawyer and designate your driveway as a toll road. Start sending threatening letters to the entity in DFW until they are forced to send the police to your house. Charge the police however much your toll is for using your driveway.

Boom, the value of a good attorney.

Look, it is costing us billions to house illegals and give them $2K each time they cross. You are just going to have to suck it up and pay a toll so they can come here and get free healthcare too.

I-10 being a piece of crap is a national security issue, but we can’t spend federal money to fix it because muh Russia.

There will probably have to be a toll free alternative to crossing the Calcasieu River if the feds agree to tolling a new I-10 Calcasieu River bridge.

I've always said, if we can get Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Boeing and the rest of the MIC industries into civil construction our federal and state highways would be plated in gold.
