just want to get some of his energy out.
I get it, let him enjoy running. There is plenty of time when he gets older to worry about how fast he is.

Thanks. That’s what I was looking for. I think he’s better than okay. That kid can run.

At 9, that's very good.
I'd advise against training until 6th grade(mostly easy running at that).
Then track in 7th.
Keep him out of Summer track.
That's retarded for distance kids, and is a big reason Louisiana distance runners suck as a whole.
Keep it fun. Maybe a fun run 1/2 mile or mile nowadays.
Let him play sports, keep him active.
No real hard training until 7th grade, with easy running 5th 6th grades if he likes it.
My qualifications...
Former D1 scholarship track and cc background.

Agree 100%. He’s competitive, though, and enjoyed being timed. And then he immediately wanted to know how good that time is, and all I could tell him was “way faster than me.”

I agree with this
Running a slow 3k in 100 degree weather after sitting through a million heats of the 100m was dog shite.

Your skills are ok, your kid can run.

Summer track is great for distance kids. I made some of my biggest breakthroughs running summer track. Ran my first sub 5 mile and my first sub 15 5000 running summer track.

saw that, but the lowest age is for a 10 year old. He’s already pretty good for a 10 year old on that chart.
Yea- I’m sure from 9 to 10 years old there’s probably a substantial gap for fun run times
Especially when you are using the precision of “go run a lap around the park, boy”

There’s a 10 year old that ran a 4:31
Posted on 2/8/24 at 10:07 pm to pelicanpride
What does your son want to do?
Posted on 2/8/24 at 10:18 pm to pelicanpride
Gaston’s kid would lap him at that age.

Every state that doesn't do summer track or formal indoor shits on Louisiana distance runners.
Michigan, Ohio etc aren't doing that shite and produce sub 4:15 milers like they grow on trees.
Distance runners need to build a really good base, with fall CC and spring track, where do they get solid base building if run summer track and indoors?
Kids in HS race too much. Especially in Louisiana with summer track and indoors being a sponsored sport.

Not bad at all. If your kid is relatively in shape and active often, that shouldn't necessarily be a surprise. No reason to make them train specifically in running. A lot of kids his age will likely be doing team sports, especially soccer.
Have you considered putting him in that? My cousin ran against a kid who never ran track until his senior year of HS but did soccer year round all his life. Ended up running in the HS mile at the Millrose Games years ago and run 4:09 in one of his first few races. Dude was a heck of a soccer player supposedly but ended up doing track in college for a bit.

He loves to run and takes pride in “nobody can run longer than me.” I’ve literally never seen him tap out because he was too tired to keep going. I keep him in team sports because I think there’s so much that a kid learns from being on a team, but it seems pretty clear he’s built to run distances. He’s also stubborn as hell and always has been. I don’t know anything about distance running, but I imagine that would be a helpful quality.

It definitely wasn’t 100% precise, but it was close because he was running around a baseball field and sticking to a specific path. And even if the measurement was off a little, he was running in grass and dodging people and other obstacles. He’d also just finished playing catcher for 45 minutes and throwing a ton of pitches. Nothing breaks the kid’s stamina. It really amazes me.

He’s been in baseball since he was 5 and recently started basketball. Never done soccer, but maybe he should try it out.

Tell them you got candy and find out. I bet it's pretty fast then.

I think 7:29 for his first time is good. My 8 year old ran a 6:29 a couple months ago and has been sub 7:00 for the last couple years. He is really fast for his age, though, and he loves to run. No formal training, but they run track at school during P.E. It comes naturally for him.
On the other hand, my 12 year old looks like he has cinder blocks tied around his feet when he runs. He can run a sub 7:00 mile, but he will have to work hard to do it. Definitely does not come naturally for him.
