That's true to an extent, but there is a tremendous amount of statistical value one gets from driving the ball well. There are a lot of lost shots when you drive the ball poorly. I learned that the hard way.

I don't disagree with this. I shot 48-38 Saturday because I had a little hitch in my address over the driver on the front. Figured it out on 9 and played 10 solid holes. I'm an ok driver of the ball, an ok irons player, but I am pretty good in wedge, chipping and putting the ball (play to a 6).

I hit a bad drive and as long as it's in play, I know I have a chance.

2 things that have helped my putting.

1. Keep your left ear still when putting. (Crenshaw)

2. Don't leave the putting green until you are 5 under on practice putts. Give yourself a bogey on 3 putts. It develops your mental game by adding pressure.

It also helps seeing them go in from that range as opposed to practicing 15 footers and missing most of them.

Ummm... is 15 feet not automatic for y'all? I'd say I make 75% from that distance (assuming it's not some weird Augusta National type break or painfully slow)

That said my dad always practiced/practices putting and the short game. He started playing when I was 5, and I never took a full swing until I was 12. So putting is by far the best aspect of my game. I legitimately can't remember the last time I had more than one three putt in a round.

That said, Everything outside of 100 yards is what gets me. I can hit my irons pretty consistently, and can drive the ball 250-275, but the odds of that being in the fairway, or even a fairway isn't great.

Bring me to a putting green of your choice, let me putt for 15-20 minutes to get the green speed, and I'll prove it. Anything within 30 feet I'm trying to hole it.

I sure hope after 20 minutes of putting at the same green you could hit a 10-15 foot putt with some regularity.

I try to get at least a couple days of practice in a week. Sometimes I'll spend more time on putting than others days. I really just practice whatever I feel like practicing that day. No set schedule or anything.

I find that waggling my left ear before the putt loosens the tension and I drain more putts.

I never practice putting. I just keep buying new putters until I find one that works.

[quote]Putting Statistics

PGA's Shot Tracker reveals that tour players on average make:

99% of putts from 3 feet and in
69% of 6-foot putts
54% of 8-foot putts
31% of putts between 10 and 15 feet
- See more at: LINK ]

the best putters in the WORLD make 31% of putts from 15 feet.

If you make 75% of putts from 15 feet you are the greatest putter in the history of the game.

3 feet "and in" includes tap ins. Putts from 3 feet are made at a 95% clip on the PGA Tour. Almost always made, but not automatic.

Go to a lower lofted club. The biggest problem most amateurs have with chipping is they try to use a 56 or 60 degree wedge.

I use a Titleist 56 degree wedge with 14 degrees of bounce off tight lies. Yes, I know, I'm a savage.

I lift the putter head about a 1/4 inch off the ground before I putt. Notice Ricky Fowler doing this and many other pros. It takes the pressure out of the hands and wrists.
