Glacier National Park - where to stay?
Posted on 2/16/14 at 9:17 pm

I've posted about this before but wanted to get some input specifically for this. After looking around, staying inside the park is very expensive. Other options include camping, but we'll be flying there so I'm not sure how feasible that is.
Those of you that have been to GNP, where did you stay? We're primarily interested in day hikes, so no overnight backpacking.

Apgar village
This is cheaper than the lodges but I stayed there and while it is not high class like the lodges, it is right on the lake and a great place to stay.
ETA: was just reading the rates page and found this funny:

Would Kalispell work? There and Flathead Lake are gorgeous.

Whatever you decide, you should be making reservations now for summer.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Not looking for anything high class, just somewhere reasonable to crash at night. We'll be on the trails most of the day.

Kalispell I would assume. When I was there we were backpacking so can't really offer much advice. It is however absolutely GORGEOUS up in the park. Parking at Logan Pass and walking along the Highline Trail or down towards Hidden Lake is certainly worth the time.

It is right on lake Mcdonald which is gorgeous. I would highly recommend if it fits your budget and you are just looking to crash there. It is right off the going to the sun road right after you enter the park. Going to the sun is the major road through the park. That park is heaven on earth.

How far away is it from the park, and all of the great hikes? I'd be willing to drive 30 minutes or so each day, so I'm not hung up with being inside the park either.

Are you on an extreme budget? If you can swing it, staying in the park would be a lot more enjoyable. You have a very limited amount of time there, you don't want to spend it commuting back and forth.
ETA: Also don't forget the Canadian side.

Look at condos in Whitefish or hotels in Kalispell. It's not far, half an hour from the park.

I've stayed right outside at a little hotel in whitefish one year it's about a 30 minute drive to the park. Other non-camping options in the park include the motor inns. The one at Lake McDonald is right next to the big lodge and their are motor inns down the road from Many Glacier Lodge as well on the east side of the park. Pretty nice and affordable and saves you the drive in the morning. They probably book up quickly though.

I went last year and Apgar campground is outstanding. All you need is a tent and such to go car camping, this isn't roughing it by any means. The local restaurant serves up a decent meal, just be sure to beat the rush.

For Glacier there is really no substitute for camping. Buying all the gear after you get off the plane is way cheaper than paying for a lodge. And you wake up a short distance from the trailhead and when you come off the trail you can just go crash at the camp rather than drive a long ways. And it is a long way to anything outside the park from any decent trailhead. That said, if you camp you'd better plan to get there very early and mid week so you can have a spot. Especially at Many Glaciers which is simply the best.
Easy? No, but if you are going to do Glacier you might as well do it right IMO. Best place in the lower 48.
As an alternative - rent a campervan in Bozeman and drive up. We might do that this year. Expensive but cheaper than driving there from GA yet again.

We stayed at Many Glacier first then ended with Village at Apgar. Both great hikes around there and in between. Apgar was very tranquil and beautiful albeit like a summer camp for white tourist families.

We stayed at goat haunt the first night of a 5 day trip

I forgot to mention that the lodges are expensive as hell and not really that good. They're only open around 3-4 months out of the year so they have to charge a hellacious amount to stay in business.
The campgrounds are very good though and often within a short walk of some restaurants that are okay (not great, but okay) and fairly reasonably priced. And if you aren't spending all day walking around Glacier you aren't doing it right, get out of the damn car.

We have been a couple of times and stayed in Whitefish. Take a look at Vacation rental by Owner. I would suggest booking early. Most beautiful place I have ever seen. We did a hike to avalanche lake in the park that was well worth it.

Look in Whitefish. There's lots of variety there with the lodge, the resort, and cheaper options like condos. And Whitefish is a really cool town that offers options on a day you don't want to go to glacier.
