Not trying to defend the kid and I think its pretty fricked that he is completely getting away w/it but if you read that linked story it says he digitally penetrated them w/his fingers. So it was technically rape but it wasn't rape rape. Also, one of the victims said she didn't think he deserved jail time.
Again, not trying to defend the guy. Just pointing out part of why he got such a light sentence.

A few months ago I was severely burned and it required surgery. It's such a different type of pain. It's almost inexplicable. Even after you're burned it just gets worse and worse, for days it feels like someone has a torch to your body nonstop. It's torture.

20 years for getting mad, going to the kitchen, grabbing a pot, filling it with water, waiting for it to boil, then going over and dumping it on someone.

It sounds like he got the book thrown at him he should get a lesser sentence on the appeal. I think after he's been in the pokie a while he'll pay up and get a lawyer can use a similar case to argue against the verdict.
