Generator Question for the OT

I have a 5700 watt generator that doesn't run quite right. I have had it for several years and early on let it sit too long requiring me to have the carb cleaned. Mechanic said to run non-ethanol gas in it and run it for an hour once a month to avoid carb issues. I have done that. Yesterday when I ran it, it would not run smoothly without the choke wide open. If I tried to close the choke it would run but constantly surge then run smooth again if I opened the choke. Love to hear if anyone has an idea what the issue is.

Don't be a tightwad- buy a new carb

Run a can of seafoam through it.
ETA, I'd also run it under a load. A generators motor can run but the generator may not be putting out any juice. Hook the coffee maker to it or hair dryer to it, they draw a good bit of power.

Put a load on it and see if it still surges. Slot of them will surge without a load. It's the way the governor is setup.

Go online and buy another carb they are cheap. Empty the fuel tank and check for debris inside it( do not run engine until u empty tank and inspect it ),then add Stabil and seafoam then fill the tank with fresh non corn fuel.Change the oil, plug, air filter as well.If your gen has a fuel shutoff valve turn it off when you done using the gen. Good luck.

Clean replace carb get it running properly with new gas then dump the gas do not store gas in it at all ever

I'd change the fuel filter if it had one. Then, I'd buy a kit and rebuild the carburetor. I had to do that with my edger and tiller. Ethanol suxx. Carb kits are usually under $20. If you take your time, watch a Youtube video, you won't have any problems. Just don't drip small parts or remember where they go.

quote:I just turn off the fuel valve to shut it down when I'm done using it. This clears the carburetor and keeps it and gaskets clean for future use. Also, I crank it up about once every 3 months whether necessary or not just to run fuel through it and repeat the shut down process. No worries leaving gas in the tank if you do this.

I've got a Generac that plugged into my house that I use about 3-4 times a year due to power outages caused by snow storms and/or ice, mainly, and it cranks on the first pull every time and runs just fine.

In the future when you have it running right. Cut the fuel off and let it run until it quits. Then drain fuel tank. There is no need having gas in something you will not run but once every few years.

"it would not run smoothly without the choke wide open. If I tried to close the choke it would run but constantly surge then run smooth again if I opened the choke."
You say it runs smooth with the choke wide open and won't run smoothly without the choke being wide open. This is normal operation as you don't want the choke to be closed unless it's being started up cold. The choke is only applied for cold starts and is to be open at all other times. The choke should be "wide open" while the engine is running. Application of choke while running will cause engine to bog and run rich. You're good if it runs smoothly with choke open.

Replace the air and fuel filters.
Pull the spark plug, gap and clean it.
Drain the old gas.
Add new, non ethanol gas with Seafoam. Do not use the whole can. Mix per instructions.
When through running it, drain the gas and use it in your lawnmower, truck, etc. Make sure your generator runs until there is no gas in the carb bowl.

I agree with the seafoam suggestion.
