UAB says five people with burns from the Shelby County explosion are headed to the medical center for treatment.

quote:

Mayor Hall said they got a call for assistance on River Road just outside of Helena in a remote area toward the Cahaba River and near the Bibb County line.

The mayor said he believes this is a gas line explosion or incident of some type. He said there are high pressure gas lines in that area.

The explosion is about a mile from any residential areas, Hall said.

The mayor said the first thing responders will do is foam the pipeline and try to contain damage.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue are sending foam and Hazmat units to the scene.

Gov. Robert Bentley ?@GovernorBentley 5m5 minutes ago My Office is closely monitoring the explosion in Helena, receiving updates from State & local officials. Pray for workers, rescue personnel.

Yes, I am not sure if it is the same pipeline or not. No one has said yet.

Sounds like this one is a nat gas line. The other one was gasoline.

Yeah, it is dry as hell ask around it too. The pipelines can be shut down. The surrounding brush, not so much.

Ruby Hubbard, who lives about three miles from the explosion, says the loud explosion shook her house. “Oh it shook my whole house and rattled the windows. I knew something had happened because we don’t have explosions like that down here. It was a loud explosion,” she said. Hubbard said she lives on County Road 13. From a hill behind her house, she said she could see flames shooting about 75 to 80 feet in the air. She said she could smell something Hubbard says her property backs up to the property where Colonial Pipeline has a gas line. There is no confirmation if the explosion happened at a Colonial Pipeline gas line. Colonial Pipeline has not yet responded to comment.

Those things are closer to the surface than many people think.

There are a lot of fires around this thing. This could get out of control very quick

Eta:

1 - 7 acre wild fire
1 - 10 acre wild fire

Confirmed it is Colonial Pipeline and they were the same company that had the pipeline leak a month ago.

They just reported it is not the pipeline as the that leaked. This one is 1/2 west of the other one.

That's just horrible. 1 incident of that magnitude is terrible, but to have 2 of them, in the matter of a month or 2, speaks that something isn't right within that company.

They clearly aren't taking enough precautions, or simply just DGAF.
