Looking for someplace different to take the family this summer for vacation. Anybody ever spent any time in Gary? I've heard its pretty cool and the reviews look interesting.

The ruins of the old steel mills are very cool if you're into that kind of thing. Pretty spooky to roam around in, but they offer good hiding places from the thugs and gangbangers.

If great lakes deterioration and urban exploration floats your boat, you have plenty of options.

Here's what one local says about the city:

Every time we travel, I am armed with my .45 caliber Glock and an extra high capacity magazine. The key to having to go into Gary, (if one must go there), is plan ahead. Think safety and security. Do not present yourself as someone lost. You will be easy prey.

Please tell me this is a joke.

Bringing your family to Gary, Indiana for vacation?

Just go to the most run-down, disreputable section section 8 apartment complex in your area and rent a unit for a week, you'll have the same experience.

Pittsburgh is a cool town, but I've always been a little facscinated by the old steel mill and auto towns around the Great Lakes. Erie, Detroit, Buffalo, and the industry that built them are really neat to learn about.

I don't mean that as a joke either. I love reading about the industrial development and eventual decay in that part of the country. If towns like Detroit and Gary are "has beens", the southern US would have been a "never was" until the mid 20th century.

I may have feared for the life of our baseball team and fans when they were there for a regional a few years ago. 23 innings into the night, all you could hear was sirens in the background of the radio broadcast.

Likewise. I've explored abandoned mills from Tacoma, WA to Chicago to Cleveland. Fascinating stuff.

Without exaggeration, Gary has to be one of the most depressing cities in the country.

I think the kids are tired of Disney every year and they all like that Michael Jackson song Billie Jean.
