If you happen to tell someone how much you make (as in for real, not your OT salary), do you include how much your company pays towards your health benefits (or other benefits like 401k match)? I just found out today that some people do this. I can understand including your average bonus, but I never knew people would consider these other company payments as part of their salary.

To each their own. I guess I can see using this increased amount if a prospective employer asks you to disclose. But is this something people normally do?

I don't discuss this with people because I don't want them to feel bad/jealous.

Wait, people lie about their salaries?

People who make the most don't usually feel they need to discuss it

I can honestly say that I have never in my life told anyone else what my salary is.

Me neither, and I agree that it's definitely not normal. I have this one friend though that seems to want to tell everyone. And I'm not kidding when I say this friend is a plant operator.

Yeah, I usually tell them $3,500 instead of $2,000. Works every time.

This though, my girlfriend doesn't even know exactly what I make. I assume she has a good idea of the neighborhood, but we've never discussed the actual number.

That's not much, so I assume you are you inflating this number with these other benefits I was talking about to get it as high as possible.

Never tell anyone your salary, including your wife. I thought everyone knew that.

I tend not to socialize with people that need to make everything a dick measuring contest. Talking personal finances in a social setting is still taboo, in my circles at least.

My finances are only known by myself, my wife and somewhat my cpa. Period. It is no one elses business.

The federal government included.

I don't why people are so secretive about their income. I'll tell close friends and family if I think they would like to know (or ask in a roundabout way).

It's for the same reason I don't tell everyone my dick size. I'm ashamed.

It's generally better to disclose as little as possible, and salary is something that almost no one has a legit need to know.
