Hey guys. I want to start this thread by stating I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine and her husband, 30, was just diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. It was a tough thing to hear and we wish the best for him and will do our utmost to help him anyway possible.

Then, as I started talking, I realized, I am 29. I rarely ever see a doctor. So, I am asking, what kinds of tests should we males being having checked out at our age? I know many of us on this site are in the 20-30 year old zone and believe we are bullet proof, but this just goes to show you anything can happen. Cancer is real and cancer is shite. As one who understands people are not immortal, can someone please give us some advice of what we should be doing, having tested, to keep us going strong. Thanks in advance!

Do you have a GP?
Typically physicals are covered under wellness once a year
They will tell you when you need to start being tested, usually earlier than normal if there is a family history (colonoscopy, prostate check)

ETA
Prayers for your friend

Not sure what GP is.

I am a teacher and have Blue Cross Blue Shield. Pretty standard. Have an annual checkup. Just wasn't sure if I should be doing more than just getting a HR/BP check....seems like this kind of stuff wouldn't even show up there and is 100000x worse.

Cancer is real and it sucks. Prayers to your friend and family.

I lost my best fried at 35 years old three years ago last Friday to terminal cancer. Nothing about cancer is pretty.

The only advice I can give you is to be there as much as possible for them. There is no telling what it is they need. Sometimes it is a shoulder to cry on. Other times it is just time. They bad part about cancer is that time is the most precious thing that you can never get back.

Terrible news and something you don't expect to hear about from a 30 year old. Sorry.

Didn't ask that part. However, I just looked at the common symptoms with colin cancer and it has scared the hell out of me. WebMD has it as:

A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool, that lasts for more than a few days
A feeling that you need to have a bowel movement that is not relieved by doing so
Rectal bleeding
Dark stools, or blood in the stool (often, though, the stool will look normal)
Cramping or abdominal (belly) pain
Weakness and fatigue
Unintended weight loss

No offense, but these are not too uncommon for anybody, huh, on occasions?

Colonoscopy screening usually starts at age 50, unless there is a history of it.

Anyone can get any kind of cancer at any age but there are usually family indicators.

What is this? Leaking? When you wipe are you supposed to see dark blood or light pinkish?

These symptoms are pretty common sounding.

WebMD will scare the hell out of anyone and have anyone who looks up the symptoms of the common cold thinking they have pancreatic cancer or aids or both.

I hope so. I know I have experienced all of those things on occasion for years and years...outside of weight loss...

I had a colonoscopy and they found a cancerous polyp. I had part of my colon removed and no other cancer was found. I was fortunate. I tell everyone 50 or older to have a colonoscopy. It saved me. The procedure is not that bad, you get to spend the day napping, and have a day of farting and your SO can't complain.
If you have had a family history of colon cancer you need to check with your physician about testing prior to age 50.

Incorporate lots of fiber in your diet. I take psyllium husks powder. Good for your intestines and arteries.

Light pink blood is fresh, like you ripped your butthole with a big turd or have h'roids. Dark blood is older and probably from farther up in the digestive system. I think.

Bright red blood on the stool is usually from hemorrhoids but mention it to your doctor, you'll probably get recommended for a scope. I did, and it's easy, painless and provides peace of mind. I had a benign polyp 3 years ago so I'm set up for another scope in a couple weeks just to check.
