Most are just acquaintances. If you're lucky you'll make a handful of friends for life, who will do anything for you and vice versa.

Here's the difference between guys and girls. When guys talk shite about a person, they're largely willing to do it to their face as well. In my fraternity whenever I talked shite about a member or a member talked shite about me, that spread quickly which would lead to a direct confrontation. Hadn't had one to back down or for me to back down. You just say what you said to everyone else.

Women aren't like that. They try to play buddy/buddy with them and then go behind closed doors both telling their friends on what a slut she is, and then keep this up for 15 years trying to slit their friends slut at any turn.

Chris Rock put it best: when men see a hot cool girl that their best friend is dating they say to themselves "I want a girl LIKE that." When women see a good looking man that their best friend is dating they say to themselves "I want him! frick that bitch, I want him!"
