I was hanging out with my nephew who just graduated from high school and we were talking about joining fraternities. I never went the Greek route.

What was the best thing about being in a frat?

What advice would you give a new kid going into rush? What did you learn that you wish you knew when rushing?

Tell him to go find the wakeboard team. I spent all my time hanging out on the boat. Chicks dig boats.

If it were 1985, I would say go for it. Today, no way. Political correctness has neutered everything great about greek life.

I joined a business frat at lsu, and really enjoyed it. A bit of different culture, boys and girls can join, no house.

Was right for me. I would recommend he look into it if he does business.

You can also be in the regular frats, but that would be expensive

I would tell your nephew to not worrying about the "frat rankings" and to just pick a fraternity where you genuinely enjoy hanging out with the guys.

This is not everyone's opinion, but I always tried to treat my fraternity more like a club, or just a part of my college experience, as opposed to it being my entire college experience (obviously easier after pledging).

I had plenty of friends outside of my fraternity and I encourage your nephew, if he joins one, to do the same. I think it helps put things into perspective that your fraternity is not your life.

Join a frat and you’ll be auto-enrolled in Pipefitters of America union.

You’ll be laying so much pipe and in your case probably receiving even more it’ll be great

Your make connections with people. You might become friends you might just know each other but eventually later down the road you might need some help and having these connections will be big.

For example. You’re out of work and looking for something. One of your former fraternity brothers is in a position to get your foot in the door with a company. Life’s all about who you know. Not what you know. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Even if you don’t intend on joining one people need to go through rush just to see if they get any bids. If you get a few you might be a better fit than you thought. If you get none, it’s no big deal. Just find something else as a club or hobby.

People are so insecure towards Greek life. You can totally notice when someone is bitter about it. T

Never did the Greek thing, but could see the appeal; especially if you land in one of the bigger / better ones.

A managed social calendar and the opportunity to meet and socialize with a bunch of folks at once, especially when you’re in a new environment, is a definite benefit.

Having the opportunity to easily meet a good deal of women pretty quickly and easily is a nice bonus as well.

One thing that rarely gets talked about, that my friends who were in ones always mentioned, is that you get a small taste of management. Sure, it may be for stupid shite like for parties, but if you take a leadership role, you’ll learn how to organize, build a hierarchy and communicate across groups and get people in motion to actually get shite done.

The connections business wise post graduation can’t hurt either. At least it may get a foot in the door that may not be there otherwise.

Like I said, it wasn’t for me, but can see the value in some ways.

I paid $880 a semester for room and board in a high COL area. Granted the frat house was a dump and our cook went heavy on unhealthy foods but that cheap cost (even factoring in dues) plus added things like keg beer parties was a lifesaver for me avoiding student loans. I could save up enough with my part time and summer job to pay all of my living and social expenses.

Best: built in social network, activities, a place to go. Call it rent a friend, but it can get pretty lonely away from home for the first time. Having all that set up for you makes it a lot easier. Some people probably don't need it. I did and it helped me break out of my shell.

Worst: it's real easy to lose sight of what's important. You're in college to get a degree. Be disciplined and don't let anybody lead you astray. There are guys who are there for the wrong reasons. They'll drag you down to their level if you let them.

Advice: enjoy it for what it is, no more or less. The brotherhood for life mantra is mostly bullshite. If you're lucky you'll make a couple of close friends. Most of those guys you'll rarely if ever see again after graduation. Once it's over, move on to the next phase of your life.
