Laura Kehoe, a PhD student at Humboldt University in Berlin came across the 'evidence' while she was studying in the Republic of Guinea.
Laura had set up a hidden camera to record the behaviour of the chimpanzees, and was stunned by what she found.
The footage showed the primates gathering around a tree that appeared to have scarring on its bark.
The chimps then grab stones and hurl them at the trunk while other members of the cartload pile them around the base of the tree.
Laura said: "Maybe we found the first evidence of chimpanzees creating a kind of shrine that could indicate sacred trees.
"And if you think about it, the fact that chimps are animals is no reason to rule out the possibility that the tree has some kind of special meaning for them."
