Polk County Sheriff?- @PolkCoSheriff
If you go to a shelter for #Irma and you have a warrant, we'll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail"

People with active warrants in one Florida county might want to think twice about heading to a shelter for Hurricane Irma. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd posted on his official Twitter account Wednesday that deputies will be checking identification at the county's shelters, and anyone with a warrant will be arrested and taken to "the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail."

Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Horstman says they're trying to educate the public before the storm hits this weekend. She says they're hoping people with warrants will turn themselves and use the next few days to deal with their legal issues.

What's the OT opinion on this? I see two sides:

All people deserve the right to safety and tweets like this could cause residents with minor warrants to risk their lives and potentially the safety of their family members.

Keeping criminals out of the shelter will open more room for law abiding citizens.

I don't think he should have made this public and just kept it quiet. Fugitives will think twice now about going to shelters to avoid being arrested.

If it's a felony warrant, haul their arse to jail. otherwise take their info and tell them you will be seeing them after the storm.

The main problem is, Police could be picking up a lot more people with warrants by simply going to their place of residence or known places, but police wait for the people on warrants to fall into their lap.

I don't think he really wants to arrest them. His officers will be better off performing other services during the storm. I think he was trying to keep them away from good citizens to minimize the trouble at the shelters.

If safety was the concern the jails are usually very structurally sound places.

It does work like that. Unless you committed a violent crime, they wont come after you.

Why would they warn them?

Maybe that's the sheriff's purpose - to keep them completely away from the non fugitives.

Makes him look tough on crime, gives the criminals a heads up to use a new alias and fake ID when going to a shelter. Now his guys don't have to deal with that during the evac. Probably doesn't make the shelter any safer, IMO.

Screams "look at me, I have political aspirations that don't end in this sheriff's office".

I think he needs to draw a firm line and make it clear.

If you have a warrant related to a traffic ticket or minor misdemeanor - don't sweat it right now. We have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

However, if you have a felony warrant, you come here at your own peril. We can't have violent offenders among innocent people.

In his original tweet, he added that it was mainly for sex offenders and pedophiles. Funny how that's always left out though.

I think it's fine regardless, but especially against sex offenders and pedophiles. Why would you want them in a shelter?

Here's his whole original tweet....
quote:

If you go to a shelter for #Irma, be advised: sworn LEOs will be at every shelter, checking IDs. Sex offenders/predators will not be allowed
