Five men force father to leave daughter at playground where they gang rape her

NEW YORK (CNN) — New York police are looking for five men who forced a father at gunpoint to leave his daughter behind so they could take turns raping her, according to a press release.
The 18-year-old was with her father at the Osborn Playground in Brooklyn around 9 p.m. Thursday when they were approached by five men, according to the release from the New York Police Department.
One of the men pulled a gun on the father and daughter and demanded that the father leave the area, the press release said.
Then each of the five suspects raped the teenager, according to the NYPD.
“The father returned a short time later with two uniformed police officers,” the press release said. The suspects then quickly fled the park and evaded police capture.
The men are suspected to range in age from teenage to 30s, according to NYPD spokeswoman Arlene Muniz.
Authorities on Saturday released a video, taken in a bodega before the rape, that they say shows the five attackers. Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released, according to the press release.
She sustained cuts to her arms, neck and knees during the assault, Muniz said.

So, apparently the father's actions are somewhat suspicious. He told police that he and his daughter were simply hanging out at a park drinking beer, which seems odd. He told his daughter earlier in the day to meet him at the park. Then, when ordered to leave, he complies (which seems pretty gutless for a dad). Finally, it took him 20 minutes from the time he left his daughter till when he located a couple of policeman and notified them. This is in NYC. There are phones and people everywhere, yet he didn't call 911. He has no explanation for what he was doing during those 20 minutes. By the time he finally found the two policeman and they returned to the park, the suspects had fled. I think there will be more to come from this.

If you think about it, he actually might have done the best thing he could. If he puts up a fight then maybe he gets killed and maybe they kill her after they are done with her. He backs down and is able to go get help before they finish her off. It could have been worse.
ETA: Well, maybe nevermind. The more details definitely make him look worse.

It seems like this doesn't apply to this situation, but this is my line of thinking. Would you rather die and your daughter get raped and die than you live and have your daughter get raped and live?

Nope. If he fights and they shoot him, they definitely start running. Do they abduct her, maybe, but I doubt it. These thugs would have panicked IMO.

I like to think I would refuse to leave, but since we have the luxury here of hindsight this is what I have to ask.
Is it better for your daughter to get raped but have a father that is shamed, or for your daughter to grow up without a father?

Fair response, and obviously if die and daughter gets raped or live and daughter gets raped, you would tend to rather live. My standpoint was rather, if i had any say so in the matter, id rather try my best to help, and id rather die knowing i tried my best, rather than live thinking i could've done better.

Yeah, that might be the more likely outcome. Who knows the best ways to handle these situations. The first instinct certainly seems like it would be to fight.
