Not many people know of or remember Idi Amin. Easily one of the most evil human beings to ever walk the face of the earth. What he did to his own people, especially the Christian population, was almost unfathomable.

Really fascinating stuff. There’s a book called A Distant Grief written by a survivor of Amin’s terror. Really incredible.

Amin expropriated businesses and properties belonging to the Asians and the Europeans and handed them over to his supporters. The businesses were mismanaged, and industries collapsed from lack of maintenance.

That's not too surprising.

And that was probably the nicest thing he did while in power.

If you've ever heard of the Raid on Entebbe, you might know a bit about him. Huge POS.

It's hard for me to believe that people don't know who he is, but the reality is he went into exile in 1979 and died about 15 years ago.

His coup to overthrow Milton Obote(sp?) was supported, if not orchestrated, by the west. Much of east and central Africa was going communist in the '60s and '70s and Amin was considered to be a better option to western gov than Obote. It didn't take long for them to recognize their mistake.

Amin wasn't as bad as Pol Pot, but he slaughtered several hundred thousand of his own people. The media loved him because he was always saying crazy things and offering his services to other countries, England in particular.

From wiki:

quote:

In 1977, when Britain broke diplomatic relations with Uganda, Amin declared he had defeated the British and added "CBE", for "Conqueror of the British Empire", to his title. Radio Uganda then announced his entire title: "His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Alhaji Dr. Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE"

quote:

His full self-bestowed title ultimately became: "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular"

quote:

In July 1975, Amin staged a £2 Million wedding to 19 year old Sarah Kyolaba, a go-go dancer

quote:

Before she met Amin, she was living with a boyfriend, Jesse Gitta; he vanished and it is not clear if he was beheaded, or detained after fleeing to Kenya.

He used a lot of British acronyms in his title, but they weren't the actual awards. CBE became Conquerer of the British Empire instead of Commander. VC was Victorious Cross instead of Victoria Cross.

He was a fricking nut, but could be personable and charismatic at times. He once did a press conference wearing orange coveralls with a bunch of crap attached to them to announce that he was offering his services to NASA to be the first black astronaut.
