Sheila Abdus-Salaam, an associate judge on New York State’s highest court and the first African-American woman to serve on that bench, was found dead on Wednesday in the Hudson River, the authorities said.
Officers with the New York Police Department’s Harbor Unit responded about 1:45 p.m. to a report of a person floating by the shore near West 132nd Street in Upper Manhattan. Judge Abdus-Salaam, 65, was taken to a pier on the Hudson River and was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after 2 p.m.
The police were investigating how she ended up in the river, and it was not clear how long Judge Abdus-Salaam, who lived nearby in Harlem, had been missing. There were no signs of trauma on her body, the police said. She was fully clothed.
A law enforcement official said investigators had found no signs of criminality. Her husband identified her body.

Supreme Court in New York is the same as a district court here. This justice was on the appellate court. I don't think she was the first black justice...but she was the first Muslim justice. Fwiw

Heard about this on the news this morning. They were describing her as the first Muslim New York Supreme Court Justice though.

That should muddy the political waters.

I'm ignorant on New York City, but why would a judge live in Harlem? Are there nice areas?

While there have always been some very nice areas of Harlem, there has been a major gentrification of the hood over the past 15 years. Ain't what it once was.

The New York Court of Appeals is their Supreme Court.

Didn't Bill Clinton set up shop in Harlem after leaving the WH?

Something tells me she NEVER let her personal political beliefs interfere with her judicial rulings.

It's pretty remarkable that an immigrant from Africa can come here and do so well to become a judge. I wonder if she had to overcome a language barrier.

She was either toesed in or fell in accidently. Once she hit the water tbough she was gone. Iirc the hudson is one of the most polluted rivers in the country.

How was her health and mental state before she died? Is she known for being suicidal or having a drug dependency? Did she like to walk or jog near the river?

She was the first black woman to serve on the NYS Court of Appeals, which is the highest state court in NY. You're correct about the status of the Supreme Court in NYS.
