The number of Americans relocating for a new job has dwindled during the last decade, a significant change from the late 1980s when more than a third of job seekers were willing to pick up and move for employment.

Over the past decade, 11 percent of job seekers relocated for work, compared to
nearly 19 percent who relocated for greener employment pastures in the prior decade, according to findings from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Why tho?

You really don’t have to move these days. A lot of jobs are done remotely and air travel cost is not that prohibitive

Drumpf's America

Americans are afraid to move because Blumpf's stormtroopers are beating and arresting those of us who aren't cis gender and white

when my career started in the early 2000s it was sort of common knowledge that in order to move up, you had to be willing to relocate. In a lot of cases, there didn't seem to be a real necessity for it other than to prove your loyalty to the company.

Maybe people were just like "screw it. We have great people locally and open positions so im not moving." And then companies began to promote at the site/location level.

I got offered a job in northwest arkansas last year. 9 hour move from Baton Rouge. Everything about the offer was fricking incredible.... except the moving part. All my friends and family are here. Very convenient when raising 2 small kids ( 2 and 1). If i was single, or married with no kids, i probably would've taken it.

Millennials not moving out of their parent's house until age 30 is the main cause of this.

I think a lot of it has to do with the high costs of living/housing in the places where people would actually be willing to relocate.

One is the ability to work remote. The other is the rise of suburbia as well. There are a lot of people born on the outskirts of big cities, so the job options are there. Many companies are also relocating to the 'burbs. Collin County is a great example in Texas.

No worries, they can hold the job open a couple years till your divorce is finalized and she and Jody settle into their new place with your kids.

Working remotely is pretty common today in a lot of industries. I've worked with a dude from Georgia for 6 years that I've met once.
