Glacier (Mt, not ak, but only because I've never been to the latter) is a magical place for me. You just have to go backcountry, and glacier's is terrific.

Glacier Bay is really amazing, unfortunately 95% of the people see it by cruise ship or day boat. It's 3 million acres of pure mountain and water wilderness. It's attached to Kluane (Canada) and . Wrangell-St.Elias (AK) to form one huge world heritage site. Wrangell - St. Elias is 6 million acres, Kluane is 5.5 million acres.

Glacier and North Cascades are the two best in the lower 48 IMO.

I agree. Maybe the reason is that there is a fairly limited time to visit and be able to hike. But the scenery is amazing. Mt. Shuksun from Picture Lake is just a classic view. We were there in the second half of July and a lot of the trails were barely open. But the crowds were minimal and that surprised me for a place that close to Seattle.

I just went showshoeing in that exact same spot a couple of weeks ago. (Shuksan is off to the left of this picture)
I grew up about an hour from the North Cascades so I might be biased, but it is extremely underrated and I like it that way. Most of the Seattle crowd goes towards Rainier, Hwy 2 and I-90. I also worked in Olympic NP for a summer and that one is pretty cool because it has everything from the beaches to the mountains.

My top 5 would be...

Zion
Glacier
North Cascades
Olympic
Yosemite

Banff and Jasper would jump to the top of this list if I included Canadian parks though.

Big Bend is very underrated. One of the most isolated places in the southern 48. Very cool topography. Mountains, desert, just bring plenty of water.

I've been three times and completely agree on all counts.

December, a good buddy that does Moto Rentals in the Smokies, goes down there for December and has rentals if you like to explore via Moto. Big moto rally during Christmas time there as well.

I am not overly impressed with it, it's different, but I wouldn't put it on the top of my list.

Alaskan parks are just meh for me. I lived there for several years and been to a few of them. I like Denali and Kenai a lot though. I think living there unwillingly (parents) has a lot to do with my dislike for Alaska though.

I've been in January and it was pretty damn cold. I've been in July and it was 120 degrees. Spring was better.

I've camped there in May twice and it's already pretty hot. Over 100 by the river, not so bad up in the Chisos basin. I'd say March is probably your best bet. Or maybe October. It's a good national park, pretty much one of a kind. There is less light pollution there than anywhere else in the country so the night skies are incredible. It's about as isolated a place as you can find.
