But what number of people constitutes fame?

I would contend the vast majority of football fans know who kirk Ferentz is. College football is one of our most popular spectacles, with 75-80M regular followers. The Big Ten has the largest fan and alumni base in the country, and it is dispersed nationally. All of those people know who he is.

Nate Silver claims Iowa to have one of the largest followings in all of college football.

Not famous?

If I stood on the street of any city outside Iowa with a picture of Kirk and asked people who he was what percentage do you think would get it right?

I'd go with 3%

No they dont. The vast majority of football fans couldnt name 5 people not on their favorite team. Its a small minority of sports fans who can name multiple depth charts of other teams.

I'd be willing to bet that at least 40% of the crowd in death valley on any given Saturday could not name more than 10 people on the team. shite I'd bet 40% of the people couldnt name 5 starting players on the field that day. A QB, RB, WR, and maybe a defensive player is where the vast majority of football fans stop.

Maybe famous in Iowa among sports fans. But "famous"? No. "Famous" is when you can go anywhere and find someone who knows who that person is. It may not be an exact definition, but it's a good enough one for this thread.

Hell I'm a college football fan and he'd probably have to be wearing an Iowa shirt for me to randomly recognize him

this. People posting on sports message boards are the minority. Half the people at Iowa games probably don't even know who Ferentz is.

By these measures, many of these people are not famous.

In fact, almost all of them.

You think most people wouldn't recognize Hugh Jackman and Pierce Bronson?

Kirk Ferentz is probably he most high profile human in the state of Iowa. That is not a remote exaggeration. My parents live in Iowa, they've never been to a game and don't follow football at all, they've known who he is for over a decade. Everyone does.

He is also respected in NFL circles, and was brought up in coaching searches for NFL jobs repeatedly.

If you took a picture of Hugh Jackman to Palm beach County, even Christina Hendricks, I'm guessing the overwhelming majority of people would not name either.

I'll give you Bronson, maybe.

If we are talking the whole of society, I'm inclined to say the majority would not.

You may be right about Ferentz being the most famous man in Iowa, but there probably isn't one current football coach I would call "famous"

Paterno was probably the closest we have seen recently.

But you think they would recognize a picture of Ferentz? Or even his name...put the crack pipe down!

The only college coach most people might recognize would be Saban and even he is a stretch when compared to Jackman, Brosnen or 90% of the celebrities on that list.

And that list is stupid by the way!

No, I am saying very few people are recognized so widely. If that is the standard, none of these people are famous.

Fame is kind of a subjectively reasoned concept, is it not?

That is a good point considering a good % of americans cannot even name the Vice President of this country.

But outside of Iowa pretty much no one would know who Ferentz is and even many in Iowa wouldn't.

However most of those celebrities would be recognized by i would say 50% of people polled around the country. Maybe not their SO but the Celebrities themselves.

Watch the old Jaywalking segments pop culture has made Americans stupid. Most people on there could name celebrities but not presidents and current politicians and world leaders.

I remember reading something that Jackman's wife told him taking the Wolverine role was probably a bad idea, lol
