SAN ANTONIO -- The family of a 13-month-old baby with a genetic brain and muscle disorder has received a formal apology from Bass Pro Shops, days after the family said Santa Claus refused to be photographed with the child on his lap.

The incident happened Friday afternoon at Bass Pro Shops in northwest San Antonio.

Megan Self said she unhooked her son Caleb from his breathing apparatus and other medical equipment, after waiting in line for a free picture with Santa Claus.

Self said Santa stood up, took one photo with Caleb, then quickly handed off the child, who has been diagnosed with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

The genetic development disorder causes Caleb's muscles to weaken. An MRI this summer revealed Caleb's brain has begun to shrink as well.

"We've been through a lot this year, physically, mentally, emotionally, financially and everything. This was basically the icing on the cake," said Self.

According to Self, Caleb has been hospitalized 11 times since March. Despite his repeated medical setbacks, Caleb's family wanted him to experience sitting on Santa's lap.

"We were trying to work with them so we can get that memory, get the picture of him on his lap and everything," added Self.

And that is this guy playing Santa's problem how?

While I feel bad for the family and the kid, some people need to get a fricking life.

ETA: Who are we to judge? not everyone feels comfortable around disabled / sick / whatever people.

personally, people with Downs make me super uncomfortable.

The picture looks better than the one with my son and the BPS Santa.

Stressed overly sensitive mom.

If I saw a sick kid hooked up to all that stuff, I'd be in a bit of a hurry to return him as well. The standing vs. sitting part, I don't really get that.

Why did he prefer to stand for said picture? Am I missing something here?

What's the difference?

Some people just don't know how to cope or act around children with special needs. They should at least try and understand that.

I believe if I was a Santa that I would be a little leery of a child that needs a machine for breathing being unhooked in order to take a picture and would probably be trying to get him back to his breathing apparatus as fast as I could as well.

I don't get the outrage, The pic looks fine. Baby was on a respirator so I don't blame Santa for thinking the photo had to be fast and then return the baby to the parents

Even Billy Bob Thornton in a Santa suit would at least take a pic with the kid on his lap.

BPS does these Santa pics for FREE. These fricking idiots are bitching about a FREE fricking picture.

If you don't like it then carry your fricking arse to some place that charges $$$$ and have them do it exactly like you want it.
