Facebook explains why it enabled Safety Check for Paris but not other attacks

People are upset that this feature wasn't turned on after the recent Beirut bombings for example.
"Idris Martin - Essentially, we only turn the safety check on when white people die.
"Majdi Abbas - As a Lebanese-American, I have family in Beirut...I also have family in Paris, given the long ties between both nations. (Lebanon began as a French protectorate.) In many cases, this extended family of mine, is the -same people-. Yet, if they're in Paris that day, and not in Beirut, FB would care...but not otherwise.
It's easy to say "this is the first time we've done this for a man-made event," but it's hard to reconcile with the truth -- the attacks in Beirut happened first."

quote:
In the immediate aftermath of the Paris attacks on Friday, many with loved ones living in the city received a new type of notification from Facebook. The social network activated a relatively new tool called Safety Check for the attacks, letting people in Paris easily tell their friends and that they were safe.
While the feature has been helpful for many, some pointed to its use in Paris but not for other recent attacks — like a twin suicide bombing that killed over 40 in Beirut on Thursday — as yet another example of western bias that apparently values certain lives more than others.
On Saturday, Facebook saw fit to respond to those accusations in a blog post written by the company's vice president of growth, Alex Schultz. In it, Schultz notes that this is the first time the company has enabled Safety Check for anything other than a natural disaster, events which the tool was originally designed for when it was released last year.

Yes, designed by westerners for westerners attending universities.
It's just shocking that they cater to westerners isn't it?
fricking Meeps everywhere.

Well, Western lives matter much more than just about anywhere else. When their own people don't value their lives, we shouldn't give a frick either.

Even Facebook being harassed by the PC police. And you would think they'd love Facebook

Majdi you're welcome to return to Beirut at anytime where I'm sure they media coverage there will be much more Beirut-centric.

If you don't like the service, then don't use it. Simple as that - same reason why I don't subscribe to The Advocate.
